Edinburgh Mask Bloc
High filtration mask distribution in Edinburgh
Message us or email edinmaskbloc@proton.me for details and requests!

We want to hear from you! We dream about doing all of these things, but time and energy are limited, so we need to prioritise. Please let us know what part of our work is most useful to you, and what else you might like to see!
We'd also love to expand the mask bloc to be able to do more, so if you're interested in joining, get in touch!
Description: Text in a white box on blue gradient background, with a doodle of a group of masked people taking a selfie: Help shape our work! We’re a small team of disabled people with limited capacity, and we want to make the greatest impact we can. So let us know: What aspect of what we do is most useful to you? We’ll always be distributing masks directly, but in addition we could aim to: - stock more mask boxes in different parts of the city, - share more frequent wastewater updates, - share more science/educational content, - run more in-person events, - run more online events, - do new things! What would you like to see? And if you want to help out with any of the above, please get in touch! No prior experience needed

The HOW of #MaskWeek2026 😷🌎🌍🌏
📆 Remember: this isn't until May 25, but we're dropping the info EARLY because it's WORLDWIDE, and we want to give The World time to learn, prepare, and collaborate. Help let your community know!
_
ROLES: spoiler alert: we're not going to tell you what to do. But we've laid out some options, & our website has examples from the past 2 Mask Weeks. Autonomous interpretations around the world!
Mask Week is pretty much 2-fold:
1. It's a way for folks who have fallen off with masking to get back into the practice & Mask Up
2. It's a way for folks who are "still COVIDing" to get the word out where you live & an opportunity to explore building out longer term efforts
If you really need direction: please help get the word out. To COVID aware folk, but also to people or orgs who might be down to participate, or people who would mask more if they had the tools. Mask Week is an on ramp that has helped folks find their way back to masking more. Amplification would rock. Printable flyers in multiple languages at www.MaskWeek.com
_
WHAT IS THIS: at its simplest, Mask Week asks folks to commit to masking up for collective health for 1 week, May 25 - 31, 2026.
Bigger picture, Mask Week is so many things: an invitation to co-ideate with folks inside or outside your region, a tangible solidarity action, a vessel to meet like-minded folks, a way to truly embody intersectional values, & so much more.
It can (and should!) look different from place to place, but our intentions are rooted in deepening our practices of community care, because masking is a practice.
_
WHO: World Mask Week is for folks:
• Looking to opt back into masking up more often
• Who are “still COVIDing” etc or trying to avoid airborne illnesses
• Needing accessible PPE including masks, rapid tests, and other resources
• Wanting to fight things like fascism, mask bans, and oppression towards Indigenous, Black, 2SLGBTQIA+, disabled, houseless, elder, youth & other marginalized beloveds

It's a month of anniversaries, and ours is among them! Edinburgh Mask Bloc was established in March 2024, and we want to celebrate two years of meeting lovely people, sharing resources, and distributing more than 2000 masks!
Please join us on Wednesday, March 24th, at 7pm on jitsi meet for a chill hangout. Bring a craft, bring a snack, and be merry - or lurk if you prefer.
Jitsi offers a text chat and Closed Captions, please let us know if there's other things that would make this more accessible to you!
Message or email us for an invite link, and see you there <3

At the bottom is a photograph of three animal plushies, each wearing a tiny mask and a party hat. Text in the white field reads: It's out birthday! Come celebrate 2 years of Edinburgh Mask Bloc with a chill online hangout
Wednesday March 25th, 7pm
Message or email us for an invite link!

Covid Action Scotland's meeting has been postponed while we're on the lookout for someone who can provide BSL interpretation. If you might be able to do this, or know somebody, please get in touch with us or Covid Action Scotland! We can offer a nominal fee, or if you'd be willing to donate your time, we would be very grateful.
Image description: A pink bar across our previous post about Covid Action Scotland's meeting featuring Edinburgh and Glasgow Mask Bloc. Text on it reads: POSTPONED while we're looking for a BSL interpreter for this event - please get in touch if you can help!

UPDATE: This meeting has been POSTPONED while we look for a BSL interpreter. If you are able to help, please get in touch! We'll post again when a new date has been secured
We will be at Covid Action Scotland's meeting on Sunday the 22nd alongside @glasgowmaskbloc to talk about how our respective blocs came to be and the work we do! There will also be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
It's free on Zoom but requires registering beforehand, we'll put a link in our stories and highlights or you can find it at CovidActionScotland.org/events
Hope to see you there!
Image description: Blue and pink background with a faint thistle design. At the bottom are the logos of Glasgow and Edinburgh Mask Blocs and Covid Action Scotland. Text in the centre reads: Glasgow Mask Bloc and Edinburgh Mask Bloc @ Covid Action Scotland’s March meeting
When: March 22nd, 2:00-4:30pm
Where: Zoom - find the link in our stories or on CovidActionScotland.org

Edit: cancelling due to forecast rain - soggy masks are not safe or pleasant to wear. We'll find a new date where the Scottish weather will hopefully be kinder!
Join us in admiring the snowdrops and discovering what other early spring flowers may be out in the Edinburgh Botanics on Sunday, February 15 - meeting at 12pm inside the East Gate. We'll go ahead in most weathers but may cancel if it's really miserable, so please let us know if you're planning to join!
Bring your mask - or try some of ours, like the Laianzhi KN95 trifold in a gradient of pleasant spring colours 🩷💛🩵
We'd love to help you find a high quality mask that is comfortable and well-fitted, especially if you've been struggling or would like to upgrade from cloth or surgical masks!
Accessibility: There are accessible ungendered bathrooms by the East and West entrances. Mobility scooters are available to borrow at the West Gate. We will figure out pace and take breaks as needed - there are many benches. Let us know if you have any other access needs and we will try our best to accommodate them.
Alt text: Background of snowdrops, daffodils and green leaves on pale blue. Text in the centre reads: Masked Botanics Social. Join us at 12pm on Sunday, February 15 at the RBGE East Gate. Wear a mask or get one from us

A wee guide for anyone who would like to try some masks this winter, or who hasn't seen the new location of our mask box in @lighthousebks! It's freshly restocked with different kinds of masks so you can find the one that works best for you!
Check Lighthouse's opening times especially around the festive period to not miss out - and let us know if you'd like us to stock a particular kind of mask there, or if the box is looking empty. A big thank you to Lighthouse for offering us this space in their shop, be sure to browse their excellent selection as well as ours ❤️
ID, two slides:
1: Photo of the second room of Lighthouse Bookshop. text at the top reads: "Looking for FREE masks at Lighthouse, Edinburgh's Radical Bookshop?" Among the shelves a freestanding shelving unit on the right is circled in white, with an arrow pointing towards it. The arrow is labeled "Find our box at the back of this shelf"
2: The bookshop from the other sided, showing the box of masks among tarot decks. Arrows from the box point to clip art of three different kinds shapes and brands of mask, with text above reading: "Experiment with different shapes: find the mask that's right for you!"

Even as the UK Health Service Agency and Public Health Scotland are sending out alerts about the big flu wave we're in, masks are barely mentioned or relegated to a last resort, when really they are one of the best tools at our disposal to stop the spread of airborne illness!
Even if you don't think you're vulnerable, being sick is miserable, and you might unknowingly put other people at risk. Wear amask to protect yourself and those around you, and to help our already struggling NHS. FFP2 or FFP3 masks offer the best protection - message or email us to get some for you to try!

1: Unprecedented flu wave in the UK - stay safe & mask up. Stats showing influenza cases in Scotland rising from 845 two weeks ago to 1.759 last week. Text underneath illustrated by a struck through virus particle and a mask with yellow head bands. Flu cases have been spiking a month earlier than most winters, and there is currently no peak in sight. Wearing a well-fitting mask reduces risk of infection and spread of all airborne illness: Flu, RSV, Covid-19 and more. Message us to get FREE MASKS.
2: Layer your precautions: Wearing a mask where you can, especially in high-risk environments such as hospitals, but also public transport and busy public spaces, protects everyone. FFP2 masks give the most protection, as surgical masks often have gaps on the sides for viral particles to enter and exit.
Get a flu vaccine if you can. It takes 2 weeks for antibodies to build, and flu vaccine effectiveness is around 30-60%, depending on age group.
As an airborne disease, washing hands has limited impact on influenza spread.
Opening windows and keeping fresh air moving can help reduce lingering viral particles.
Staying home and resting when ill is important to protect others and to encourage full recovery.

As an airborne disease, washing hands has limited impact on influenza spread.
Opening windows and keeping fresh air moving can help reduce lingering viral particles.
Staying home and resting when ill is important to protect others and to encourage full recovery.

PETITION TO BROADEN ELIGIBILITY FOR THE COVID VACCINE IN SCOTLAND! LINK IN BIO!
the criteria for receiving the COVID vaccine has become ridiculously strict and so many vulnerable people are having to pay £80+ or go without this essential vaccine!

Thank you so much to everyone who made the @lighthousebks Radical Book Fair such a wonderful, community care centred event! Between mask bloc comrades and bookfair volunteers, we distributed over 1500 masks to attendees across five days of events. Wearing a mask to an event like this is a very small and achievable bit of radical activism that helps keep your community safe. It prevents the spread of airborne disease, and allows people who are most at risk of infection to attend events in person when so much of the world is closed off to them. You shouldn't have to risk your health to be surrounded by community in person, and wearing a mask mitigates that risk for everyone. We are grateful to Lighthouse Books for continuing to advocate for masking at events, and to the community of book lovers who have continued to embrace it 😷💜
If you're interested in finding out more about the mask bloc, what we do, and accessing free masks, covid tests, and resources, please get in touch and we would be happy to help.
We couldn't do this work without the generous donations we receive from the community, so a massive thank you if you've donated to us recently! You can find out more about how to donate to us in the link in our bio 💜

We're @lighthousebks Radical Book Fair this weekend to support them with masks, come on by!
We secured a large lot of masks recently and would love to get them into the community as we move into the winter months. So if you want to try having masks available at no cost to you, we can provide you with as many as you need! Or if you're an individual wanting to find a mask that truly works for you, or learn more about airborne disease prevention, or just meet our super cute maskots, come down to Assembly Roxy.
We'll definitely be around Sunday between 12 and 3 on the Fair's Community Day, together with many other amazing initiatives and groups! Mask bloc members will also be around Friday evening and on Saturday
ID: Text on blue gradient background. In the bottom left corner, a drawing of someone coughing into their hand, with clouds and virus particles swirling around them. Text reads: Do you run a business in Edinburgh? Keep your staff and customers from getting ill this winter! We have acquired a large amount of masks and are giving them away for free in packs of 100.
Put them on your service counter, in your reception area, or your break room!
It’s not inevitable to get “that cold that’s going around”.
Come to the Radical Book Fair at Assembly Roxy this Sunday between 12 and 3pm to pick up a free bag
