Deep in the Escalante River corridor with @eastforest, we stumbled upon a magnificent find 👀 apanel of petroglyphs, half-hidden behind in the brush.

Concentric circles. Snakes. Figures rich with meaning, carved by hands that understood this land in ways we can only begin to imagine. We don’t know who made these or exactly when, perhaps the Ancestral Puebloan (Fremont or Basketmaker), common throughout the Escalante canyon system from between 700–2,000 years ago.

These are petroglyphs (carved/pecked into the rock) rather than pictographs (painted), and they’re stunning! The dark background is desert varnish — a natural manganese and iron oxide coating that builds up over centuries, which the artists pecked through to reveal the lighter sandstone beneath.

You can sense our awe and joy in discovering (for us) such a sacred and primal space 🧡🏜️
