Sarah Willmann '26 BSE arrived at @dukeuniversity looking to solve problems at the intersection of math, science and sustainability, and what she found surprised her.
"You would not believe how much research there is to do in the realm of concrete and cement, and there’s a small but vibrant community of people who make it happen."
From a @nsfgov research experience at @cuboulder to joining Laura Dalton's lab, Sarah dove deep into a research setting she didn't expect to love. Along the way, she led @duke.asce all while serving as drumline captain.

Working like a dog to win this race. 🐶 ♠️ 🚲 To conquer the 15-mile land and sea course at the annual Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race, this team of senior mechanical engineering students built an amphibious vehicle from scratch! The vehicle includes upcycled bike wheels, a welded steel frame, recycled water jugs for flotation and custom 3D-printed wheel paddles to propel through the water. To tie it all into the theme “Dogs Playing Poker”, the team plan to dress up as dogs and deal poker chips while cruising the course. Wish the team luck on their race this weekend!! 🏁

Congratulations to Hai (Helen) Li on being elected a fellow of @aasorg, one of the world’s largest general scientific societies and publisher of the @sciencemagazine family of journals. 👏
Li, chair of Duke ECE with a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science, was recognized for distinguished contributions to the hardware design and implementation of machine learning algorithms, their translation to industrial practice, related educational endeavors and service to the profession.

Congratulations to Duke ECE's Jungsang Kim on receiving the Changjo Medal, South Korea's highest honor for scientists and engineers. 🏅
Kim was recognized for his work commercializing quantum computers through trapped-ion systems. He is the co-founder of IonQ, one of the world's leading quantum computing platforms.
"We could not be prouder of Jungsang’s incredible impact as the driving force of a tectonic shift in computing, on a scale akin to the invention of the semiconductor transistor that launched the age of silicon computing," shared Jerome P. Lynch, Vinik Dean of the Pratt School of Engineering.

We're thrilled that Duke BME's Amanda Randles is the 2026 Daubechies Lecturer at @dukeuniversity.
Randles’ lecture, “From Reactive to Proactive: Reimagining Health Through Digital Twins,” will detail her work using tools such as wearable data devices and medical imaging to build digital twins of patients.
This year, the lecture will serve as the keynote address at the sixth annual Duke Research Summit on April 24.

For the first time, all seven of our graduate programs are ranked in the top 25 by @usnews—a clean sweep!
"The continued excellence of our programs across the board is the result of exceptional efforts by our faculty and staff to train tomorrow’s engineering leaders," shared Dean Jerome Lynch.
Overall, Duke Engineering ranks 22nd, our eighth year in a row in the top 25. 💪

As the Artemis II crew begins its return from the moon, we're reminded that every historic mission stands on the shoulders of those who came before.
Former @nasa astronaut Robert Satcher MD PhD, who completed two spacewalks during his 2009 mission, joined us last year for a powerful discussion on how leaders navigate uncertainty, pressure and high-stakes decision-making.
🚀 Insights from Satcher and our other panelists have stuck with us, especially in moments like this one. Linked in our bio.
