In early May, Joy Mae Rogers reached out to me – saying if I ever found a bottle from Spooner Bottling Works during my bottle digging adventures, she would be interested.
Joy’s great grandfather, Joseph Wurzer, founded the Spooner Bottling Works in #Spooner, Wis. Joy is trying to collect bottles from the bottling company to put in a wood crate with the company logo on it that Joseph hand painted.
Loretta, Joseph’s only child and Joy’s grandmother, was nicknamed “Burp” because of Joseph owning and running the soda factory.
I hadn’t encountered any Spooner Bottling Works bottles in my bottle digging adventures, as I don’t bottle dig in northern Wisconsin where I would be more apt to find such bottles. But Joy was in luck.
A few years ago, a woman from northern Wisconsin contacted me. She was a bottle digger in the 1990s and had amassed 12 boxes of bottles that were sitting in her garage. She had no plan to display the bottles. The woman contacted me and asked if I was interested in assuming ownership of her collection.
I drove multiple hours in one day to pick up the collection and bring it home. Amongst that collection – a clear Spooner Bottling Works bottle. I told Joy I had a bottle from her great grandfather’s business, and would be happy to part with it as it meant much more to her than it did to me.
The bottle made it safe and sound to Joy, and she couldn’t be happier to add it to her collection. It’s my pleasure to pass on history to someone who will truly appreciate it. #savinghistory #oldbottles #sodahistory

Just pulled this vintage Triumph #padlock out of the ground at a permission in #Beloit #Wisconsin #savinghistory #metaldetecting

Sometimes I head to my local coin shop to sift through the token bin. Most of the time I purchase tokens. Every once in a while he lets me swap tokens I have for ones in the bin. This was yesterday’s take home. #savinghistory #tokensforlife #oldtokens

Since I wasn’t able to make it to the DTH hunt today, I decided to go out to a new permission, an 1860 or older farmstead near Darien, Wis. This is my first good find - 1899 Barber dime.#sweetsilver #metaldetecting #savinghistory

🚨🚨BUCKET LISTER ALERT 🚨🚨
Last week I was finally able to get out to a new permission in Janesville, Wis., a house built in 1844.
The owners’ son had contacted me about the home and said his parents, lovers of history, would love to have me come out and detect.
I wasn’t the first person to detect the property. A father and son did so about 5 years ago, mostly in the expansive front yard around the house, and they found amazing items.
As we ventured near the front yard, my detector picked up a strong signal. I dug my plug and saw a round object half exposed in the hole. When I first pulled it out, I thought given its size to be a large cent, but then I noticed something – the obverse looked like a seated liberty half dollar. Turning it over, so did the back.
But all was not what it seemed. The silver finish on the coin was flaking off. That’s when I realized what I had, a bucket lister – my first ever counterfeit coin – and it was a doozy – an 1877 seated liberty half dollar. #counterfeitcoin #savinghistory #metaldetectingwisconsin
