DRIFT VIDEO ART

A wonderful addition has been made at the last minute. To round off our first edition, we are delighted to welcome none other than one of the main protagonist of Belgian conceptual art, who was also most directly influenced by the origins of psychogeographical play. Many thanks to @smakgent in Ghent, Belgium.
Marcel Broodthaers
La Pluie (projet pour un texte)
1969 / 2 min.
“Marcel Broodthaers is seated and writing. He has hardly started writing before he is pelted by a heavy shower. The ink dissolves. The written words fade. Yet the artist continues writing imperturbably. The new words he writes down on the paper also vanish instantly. In ‘La Pluie’, Broodthaers makes reference to his former career as a poet. He shows that, despite his lack of success in that profession, he will always remain a master poet. Even the vanished and vanishing words from his pen can be read meaningfully between the lines. The inscription on the wall behind him – Département des Aigles – is a reference to the imaginary museum that Broodthaers had founded in 1968 and shows that the film was shot in his own garden. He had borrowed empty crates from the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels for this Musée d’Art Moderne, and stuck postcards onto them showing 19th-century works of art from the museum’s collection. In this film he is using one of these crates as a writing desk.” @smakgent

Last but not least, we would like to focus on three prominent films from the 1970s and one from the early 2000s that we consider to be general key works - in general and in our research. It is almost impossible to describe how much we appreciate being able to screen those pieces, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) @electronicartsintermix for their help, cooperation and assistance at short notice in making these timeless works available to us, starting with our opening films on Screen A, B, C and and their corresponding FM frequencies:
- JOAN JONAS
Song Delay
USA, 1973 / 18:35 min.
Performing with a “cast” that includes Gordon Matta-Clark, Jonas choreographs a theater of space, movement, and sound, with the urban landscape of New York in a featured role. Jonas creates a highly original if enigmatic theatrical language of gesture and sound, as she and her performers play with emblematic props, unexpected rhythms of space and scale, references to painting, and audio delays.
- GORDON MATTA-CLARK
Clockshower
USA, 1973 / 13:50 min.
In this film of one of his most daring performances, Matta-Clark climbed to the top of the Clocktower in New York and washed, shaved and brushed his teeth while suspended over the streets in front of the huge clockface.
- NANCY HOLT
Utah Sequences
USA, 1970 / 9:22 min.
And later to follow
- DAN GRAHAM
Death by Chocolate: West Edmonton Shopping Mall
CAN, 2005 / 8 min.
The resulting work provides a coldly beautiful view of mall culture: its architecture, its consumer public and its unique aesthetic world. This work also provides a corollary to Graham’s own prodigious writings and projects on the public spaces of corporate capitalism.

Another highlight, and at this point, many thanks to Richard Jackson @richardjacksonstudio for allowing us a glimpse into his dimension, showing this short 3 minute 10 second psychogeographic documentation of “Accidents In Abstract Painting”.
“In this outdoor spectacle, Richard Jackson will fly and crash a remote-controlled, ultra-lightweight, battery powered, model military jet plane with a 15-foot wing span, and filled with paint, into a 20-foot canvas wall that reads ‘Accidents in Abstract Painting.’ On January 22, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. Jackson’s plane will take off and circle the field directly south of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena for approximately 30 minutes. The climax will occur when the plane is aimed toward and flown into the canvas wall; the plane, made of balsa wood, will splinter on impact. Its contents brightly colored paint will splash onto, and then drip slowly down the canvas, making an ,accidental’ painting.” - Pacific Standard Time

During viennacontemporary, the first edition of DRIFT (@drift_videoart) titled Psychogeography will take place on September 12 at the historic drive-in cinema. A wide selection of video artworks will be presented across three epic screens, accompanied by live video performances. The program has been curated by artist Robert Pawliczek @r_pawliczek (NY/Vienna).
Around 40 national and international art and experimental films will be presented, including works by VALIE EXPORT, Maria Lassnig, and Franz West. The focus lies on video as an artistic medium for exploring urban space. Psychogeography explicitly invites visitors to “wander and drift”: to move freely throughout the drive-in cinema and experience the films in the special setting.
The program includes, among others, a 360° work by Albert Mayr. The evening concludes with a DJ set by Sniffin’ Glue—the musical project of photographer Anna Breit (@anna_breit) and Marlene Zlabinger (@adhs.lene) —accompanied by visuals created by the DRIFT team.
A shuttle service will be provided from the viennacontemporary to the drive-in cinema. Advance registration by email to press@drift-videoart.org is mandatory.

- we cannot express our gratitude enough for the selfless support we have received from many sides so far and would like to take this opportunity to thank the greatly appreciated art historian Judith Rodenbeck* in particular. It is an immeasurable honor to to add her contribution in the form of an introduction text, which sets the exact right temperature for the evening:
„(…) If one were to articulate a psychogeography of the drive-in theater, one would point to the ubiquity of the automobile, the defining feature of open land or parking lot and, in turn, suburbanism and the implication of private property echoed both by cars and parking, the tension between cinematic dream-factory and machinic cocoon, and (it goes nearly without saying) the synechdoche of vehicles and movies. (…)“
Test prints have been approved and our booklet / map can be picked up together with the program at the entrance of @autokinowien the on September 12th, 2025. @didt_publishing
*JUDITH RODENBECK is an art historian and critic, and author of Radical Prototypes: Allan Kaprow and the Invention of Happenings (Cambridge: MIT Press, 2011).
