Quite a huge part of photography is luck (despite what us photographers will have you believe!). We cannot plan exactly what will happen at a photo shoot, nor predict the mood or high jinx of the subjects being shot.

When I was heading to Pacino’s house in Beverly Hills did I expect Al to be all jovial and want to be silly?Of course not!! I was expecting the ‘Godfather ‘ wanting to make me an offer I couldn’t refuse rather than a
#KennethWilliams impression, which #MichaelSheen would have been proud of!

No matter whatever you plan for a portrait photo shoot, something better usually happens on the photographic journey.

Photographing Ian McDiarmid felt a bit like trying to bottle lightning… if that lightning also happened to be impeccably precise, deliciously mischievous, and capable of breaking you into fits of laughter mid-sentence.

Of course we all know him as the naughtyEmperor in STAR WARS (even though I loved him in DIRTY ROTTERN SCOUNDRELS playing the valet to Michael Caine), but watching him slip into Lear is like seeing a completely different constellation form — darker, rawer, and gloriously unhinged.

I know photographers overuse the word ‘collaboration’ but in this situation the word is used correctly!Ian came to the key artwork shoot just wanting a closeup portrait, which was a fine idea.But after chatting for an hour or so about how he want ‘his’ LEAR to be, we winkled out a more captivating idea

Ian explained he was passionate for the part of the play where Lear goes a little bonkers after giving away his riches and roams the countryside tired and vulnerable. So I suggested we literally strip everything away to show a vulnerable old man on the brink of madness…and he gets his kit off! Ian adored the idea and jumped into action.

Honestly, when ‘collaboration’ clicks like that, it feels a bit like theatre itself: fleeting, electric, and impossible to fake.

Bless you Dark Lord of The Sith, as I do think we have made a very captivating poster that sums up YOUR Lear!

Of course, I adore photographing the Hollywood glitterati and capturing iconic faces. BUT now and again I have the pleasure of spending time with phenomenal character actors and hear the anecdotes that have peppered their very long career.

David Bradley is the UK’s equivalent to Kevin Bacon! He has worked with practically every actor you can think of. With his down-to-earth Yorkshire mindset and pin sharp wit, I can see why he is every director ‘go to’ person when they need a deep, complex, yet uneasy character.Currently you can see David as the Blind Man in Guillermo del Toro’s FRANKENSTIEN making friends with Jacob Elordi!

Everyone will know him as #MrFilch the caretaker of #Hogwarts in the #HarryPotter movies…and until the end of time he shall always be linked to Filch. But I first saw him on screen in OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH, which also launched the career of #MarkStrong and some guy called #DanielCraig.

Though recent years I’ve loved his standout work in #Broadchurch, acting alongside @simonpegg in #HotFuzz and #TheWorldsEnd; playing the father of @rickygervais in #AfterLife and he even turned up in #GameOfThrones. But personally, I ADORED seeing him portraying William Hartnell’s #TheDoctor as the original #DrWho alongside #PeterCapaldi incarnation.

Long may Mr Bradley shine and fill our screens with intense, hilarious, slightly creepy and sinister people.

…also, he made a fine dancer in the Jack Savoretti music video of YOUTH & LOVE and a Postman with a loyal puppy in Lewis Capaldi’s WISH YOU THE BEST.

This glorious world lost a legend, a madman, a bat-biting, mumble-mumbling, reality TV icon, rock God.I’m pretty sure when Prince Ozzy shuffled off this mortal stage for the final encore he was possibly yelling at Alexa and wondering where Sharon put his ‘f*cking slippers’.

Ozzy was a man of contradictions: terrifying on stage, sweet and bewildered off it; indecipherable in interviews, yet always brutally honest; capable of commanding stadiums, yet regularly baffled by toasters and television remote controls.

He leaves behind a legacy of thunderous music, millions of horns-thrown fans 🤘, a few traumatized ants, and a world that’s just a bit less loud today.

Ozzy’s final wish? To be buried with a harmonica, a copy of Blizzard of Ozz, and strict instructions that if anyone tries to hologram him back on stage, they better make him look good. Or else!

In lieu of flowers, mourners are encouraged to scream “ALL ABOARD!” at passing trains, crank up the amps, and pour one out (carefully) for the man, the myth, the Madman of Rock, Prince of Darkness.

Rest in peace, Ozzy. You’ve finally gone off the rails of the Crazy Train—and what a glorious ride it was.

Benedict Wong is the kind of actor who can steal a scene with a single raised eyebrow. While many know him as the sardonic sorcerer in Doctor Strange, he absolutely launched himself into my heart (and space) with his role as Bruce Ng in one of my favourite films, The Martian. Seriously—anyone who can help bring Matt Damon home from Mars, in a glorified tin can, earns a spot on my cinematic Mount Rushmore.

When Benedict and I teamed up for a photo shoot, I wanted to capture the darker, moodier side of Obi Wong. So I tuned into Caravaggio and played with chiaroscuro in this lighting test…and included much shadow with highlights.

I do love making a photographic contact-sheet at the end of the shoot to encapsulate the session.Usually I let the subject feel free to unleash whatever they want to do. With Gary Oldman I wanted something special.

I made a list of characters Gary was known for and Mr O, at lightening speed,recreated the facial expressions of each character.

Bear in mind how fast I shoot we literally took one shot of each facial contortion; I found it amazing how he can slip between the faces. Some actors, mention no names, need ‘time to prepare’ to get in character…whereas Gary just got into the zone and off we went.

Here is a challenge for you…can you name who these 9 characters are?I think a few are very easy but there are some hum dingers in there…like the bottom right.
