Note from Andrea:
I was born in 1966, a Fire Horse year in the Chinese zodiac’s 60-year cycle, where animal and element intertwine to shape a life. In this Firehorse year of 2026, as I complete the circle of 60 years, I find myself dancing a solo that is related to a larger collection of matrilineal work, Firehorse and Shadow, that I have been co-creating with collaborators Annie Katsura Rollins, Sarah Chase, Cindy Mochizuki, and composer Ben Grossman. This new solo moves through time as I do, weaving memory with the present, tracing echoes from past choreography that remain in my body. It is a quiet act of remembering and becoming, and one more way of bringing to light the often-unspoken experiences of Chinese Canadian women.

[ID: Andrea is dancing Firehorse 2026 in the darkened theatre of The Dance Centre. She is alone onstage, hands crossed at the wrists, upper back arched, and face turned up. She is wearing light coloured clothing, and lit warmly. Her arms are bare, and catching the light. Her expression is deep with emotion; she is maybe communicating yearning, or release, or ache. Opening night is sold out, best availability still left for Friday May 1st, 7pm! Come see what we’ve gotten up to 🩵

In this new work 田天 tiántiān (field/sky), we enter the life stories of Andrea and Judy.
We glimpse the intimate interior of a Chinese village home on the side of a mountain, a river in Wakefield Ontario, a bamboo harvest, open conversations in a car, and the necessary separation of mothers and daughters. Judy and Andrea reveal their own inner emotional lives and histories that shift dreamlike between China and Canada; all reflected through the danced harmony of two exceptional dancers.

Judy is making the shape of a fermata with her hands: left arm raised and curved, right pointer finger pointing up towards the palm of her curved left hand. Andrea is facing in towards her, left arm stretched behind her back. Andrea is looking towards Judy, and Judy is looking outwards to the left, her face is lit with mischievous inquisitiveness. 2 days until 田天 tiántiān at @heratmorrow! We are so excited to share with you.
If the piece were a soundscape, performer Jia Yi (Judy) describes it as: a knock, as wind passing by, as a rooster call. If a painting, its colour palette would be: mature bamboo green, new sprout leaf green, irrigated dirt brown, almost white blue, and deep sea blue. 💙
Come sense it for yourself – April 30th to May 3rd at Morrow (#204 - 910 Richards St), as part of asian heritage month at morrow with @oddmeridianarts.
