1977-1978年。
FUJICOLOR 77 と 78 のフィルム枠。
少し焼けたフィルムの質感。
そして、当時のDOVEウェットのカラーリング。
今の時代だからこそ、逆に新しく感じる。
日本で初めて、サーフィン専用のウェットスーツメーカーとして誕生してから数年。 当時まだ20代前半だった、若き日の戸倉康守 @dove_tokura と当時のライダー達。毎日、ただ波乗りが好きで、いい波を追いかけていた。
当時、日本にはまだ参考となるサーフィン専用ウェットスーツメーカーは存在せず、海外を巡り、外国のウェットを研究する日々。
しかし、そのままでは日本の海には合わなかった。
だから戸倉は全国を回った。北から南まで、日本列島の四季を肌で感じながら、その土地、その海、その気候に本当に必要なウェットを考え続けていた。
半袖長ズボンの “シーガル”。
半袖半ズボンの “スプリング”。
そして、当時画期的だった “チェストジップ” の誕生。
その後、多くのメーカーがそのスタイルを取り入れていった。それでも戸倉は、特許で囲うことをしなかった。
本当に良いものは、海の世界へと広がっていけばいい。それが、DOVEのスタイルだった。
そして “リーフブーツ” も、戸倉が日本に初めて持ち込み商品化した。そのきっかけは、フィリピンで自身が怪我をした経験だったという。

まだまだ他にも、数えきれないほどのプロダクトが、実際の海での経験から生まれていった。
今では当たり前になったものも、当時はまだ国内に存在していなかった。そして、その発想やスタイルは今もなお、日本のサーフシーンへ広がり続けている。
本当に良いものは、やがて海全体へ広がっていく。
それは、DOVEが昔から否定してこなかったこと。
ただ、形だけをなぞることと、
海で積み重ねてきた経験や思想から生まれるものは、まったく違う。
戸倉が今でも現役で、日本中、そして世界を動き回っている理由もそこにある。
DOVEのウェットスーツは、ただの道具ではない。海と向き合う中で、本当に必要なものを形にしてきた歴史そのもの。
これから、それぞれの商品が生まれたストーリーも少しずつ伝えていきたい。

セレモニーでは、インビテーションを受けた選手紹介が行われ、サーファーたちによるパドルアウト、海と人がひとつになるような神聖な時間が流れます。「海を敬い、人を敬う」というエディの哲学に触れ、ここから始まるシーズンに向けての祈りが捧げられます。
“The Eddie” は、20フィートを超える本物のビッグウェーブが訪れた日だけに開催される特別な大会で、ゆえに「幻の大会」と呼ばれ続けています。2025年12月に今年のセレモニーが行われ、2026年3月までを開催期間としています。
DOVEにとっても、このセレモニーは特別な意味を持ちます。50年にわたりサーフカルチャーと共に歩んできた私たちにとって、ここノースショアで交わされる敬意と絆は、ブランドの根源にある“魂”そのものです。
2023年、ルークシェパードソン @casualluke 2024年、ランドンマクナマラ @landon_mcnamara がともにDOVEのインパクトスーツを身にまとい優勝している。
そして忘れてはならないのは、1990年に日本人で初めてこの伝説のビッグウェーブコンテスト「エディ・アイカウ（The Eddie）」に招待されたのも、DOVEのライダーだったということ。その挑戦は、日本のサーファーに新たな扉を開き、その後も脇田貴之 @twakita12 、そして角勇海 @isamu_sumi へと受け継がれ、DOVEの歴史の中で大きな意味を持ち続けています。
こうして受け継がれてきた道のりは、ライダーたちと共に未来へつないでいくべき大切な文化であり、DOVEが守り続ける“サーフカルチャーの魂”そのものなのです。

先日、オーシャンアスリート・村林友安が、戸倉への挨拶のためDOVE factoryへ来社。
SUP、フォイルサーフィン、ウイングフォイルなど、常に海の最前線を走り続ける日本を代表するウォーターマンのひとり。
ハワイ・マウイを拠点に世界のトップウォーターマン達とセッションを重ね、モロカイ〜オアフ海峡横断レースへの挑戦や、ダウンウインドフォイルなど、国内外で幅広く活動。日本におけるフォイルカルチャーの黎明期からシーンを牽引してきた存在でもあります。

One of Japan’s leading watermen, Tomoyasu continues to push the boundaries of the ocean through SUP racing, foil surfing, wing foiling, and more.
Based in Maui, Hawaii, he has spent years surfing and training alongside some of the world’s top watermen, taking on challenges like the Molokai to Oahu crossing and downwind foil runs while helping shape Japan’s foil culture from the early days.
Always staying connected to nature while exploring new possibilities in the ocean, his approach perfectly reflects the authentic surf culture DOVE has always believed in.
