Here’s a #CoreClosetCornelius western shirt smile pocket test. Fabulous, but do’t love the puckering.

Love it! Absolutely love it!

The aim for this version was a wearable muslin. I had never used piping and I was not confident about fit. It was exciting to make a shirt with sleeves that aren’t way too long and a torso that’s not super long. (I’m 5’4”.) I was also hoping for a shift that didn’t gap at the chest. I was tired of that particularly since I’m a B cup. Gaps seem unnecessary.

It was fun to learn about placing a button at the highest point of the boob. Makes sense. I’ll be curious to see how I like the button placement. I struggled a bit to find a good location for the buttons given where I wanted the boob button and the top button.

I’m so glad I bought a piping foot. I know it’s possible to use a zipper foot but a quick test proved to me I’d be cursing a lot if I went that route. I ended up trimming piping cord at the seems to reduce bulk. I didn’t read about that so I hope that doesn’t cause issues in the future.

The fabric is from the way back stash. It’s a very nice cotton but I could never figure out what to do with it. Once the red piping struck me as a way to pop the mid-tone colors of the floral pattern, I knew this was the fabric for a Cornelius. Buttons are from the stash as well.

The next Cornelius is for a wedding party in June and I will use lightweight silky poplin from Closet Core. I thought of the muslin as a cross between view A & B, but it’s basically B with the A pockets. I’m thinking the next one will be more view A with piping only on the cuff and yoke. I’m still not sure. The B collar is so nice and westerny.

I wore the shirt this weekend to an art event and got SO many compliments! It looks fabulous but I’m sure it looks good because it actually fits me. It was amazing to wear. I’ve always like button downs but found them annoying to be in. I was always futzing with the gap, the sleeves, the too-much material at the bottom hem.

I wish I had someone take a photo of me in the shirt. Next time.

I just finished a button down shirt! It’s funny and amazing to love best the old Singer to make buttonholes.
I’m lucky enough to have a dedicated space for sewing (it’s actually a dedicated sewing-art-work space but pictured is the sewing section.) Yeah for the spring trees out the window!

I think I’m not understanding a fundamental of stretch fabrics. This is the @theassemblylineshop #talhighcuffsweater
It’s a great pattern and this is the 2nd one I’ve made. Notice that the neck band really squinches up the neck, which didn’t happen on the first one. This rib fabric is stretchier than the one I used in the first one, but I don’t understand why that should make a difference because I’m cutting the same size piece of un-stretched fabric which I sew onto the same size neck line. (I’ve checked to make sure I cut properly.)
Any thoughts of why this happened? I’m prefer how the neck lays on the first one so I’m happy that I basted this neck rib so can easily redo it.

So bad at posting but I am still making.

Pretty excited about finishing this #siennajacket collar.

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted sewing on IG (I got a bit frustrated with IG.), but I miss having a record of what I’ve made so I’m at it again. Here’s a tee I designed myself as an exercise called perfect tee. I love it and have made a turtleneck as well. First sew with a birthday serger! made in a thin cotton grey knit with little hearts.

woot! Zipper pocket for the #seaforthpants installed. It was easy. I did one each of the two methods mentioned in the instructions. I think I prefer sewing interfacing on right side the cutting opening, bringing to back and fusing. The corners are neater. Thanks @nimbonuts for words of encouragement.

Getting ready to make some cold weather running tights and a Juno top.

This turtleneck makes me so happy. It’s the result of my self-draft project trying to figure out why I had humps near the back shoulder seams of tees. I did start from scratch, but end result changes were 1) moving outer shoulder seam about 1/2” forward to line up with my own shoulder. 2) widen the shoulders. The arm pit may be a bit lower. All of this was a really good lesson. It only took me four muslins! hahahaha. I’m wising up and used old event-type tees in size XL for fabric.

I have the turtle draft and a tight next crew. What I’d like to do next is take these alterations and apply them to tees I love, like the Rowan V-neck and Iris Tee.

What a treat to make this Rowan V neck. Thanks to @andrea_jones for the sizing advice (I also sized up two) and for suggesting the V-neck tutorial by @straightstitchdesigns
(I was going to take a better photo but it’s Cleveland in winter. There’s zero light so here we are!— a bit of dino, a bit of Nee.)

I love how this fits. The fabric is a weird, spongey 98% cotton 2% spandex from Joann’s. (How I love a dinosaur!) However, I made a long sleeve version in 95% cotton 5% spandex and it’s smaller than I like so I’ve learned something about using super stretchy fabrics. I’ll recut this as some sports bras.

Does anyone know a source for cheap knits for muslins?

I always like goals so here’s my #makenine2021:
➡️ Self-drafted great fitting Tee. This past month I’ve been playing with knits and experimenting with different tee & turtle tops. Generally they are good, but I still am getting a hump along the seam of the back shoulder, the shoulder seam isn’t wide enough, and the outside shoulder seam could come forward a smidge.
➡️ Jeans. I Just got an email wanting a review proving that it’s been 60 days since I ordered the @closetcorepatterns Ginger Jeans class and I haven’t yet made it past watching the fit lesson. (I loved finding out about twill twist!)
➡️ Sporty items for running, cycling, XC skiing — warm leggings, sports bras that fit my big rib cage, base layer tops, vest. I have an very old Green Pepper sport bra pattern that I’ve tested and like. I even bought some super cool fabric but it’s just sitting. The @fehrtrade patterns appeal too since she herself is a runner and cyclist.
➡️ More undies. I’ve made a few pairs of undies (using @madeit_patterns Go Shorties, @paper_theory Stevie Knickers) that I really like. I want to replace all the ratty RTW ones I’ve been holding on to for slow laundry weeks.
➡️ In addition to the sports bras mentioned above, I want to make daily bras using the very old McCall’s #8813 I’ve tested and @wardrobebymepatterns bralette I’ve been avoiding.
➡️ Greater variety in fabrics. I just ordered the exact same dark navy fabric from 2 places. And pretty much everything else I ordered in the past month or so is navy or black. Expand! Think flowers, geometric, color. Pictured are some lovely colors I did manage to order.
➡️ Pants: Pamona, Winslow Coulottes, Seaforth. I’m all set with patterns and fabric for each.
➡️ Cascade Duffle Coat by @grainlinestudio The pattern was a Christmas gift and I just ordered a special fleece from @therainshedinc
➡️ Blouse: I have a big 💗 for @delphinemorissette (pictured) tops.
