I am excited to share I have been selected as the Women@MIT Research Fellow, 2026.
My project, "Women's Work: Making the Mediums" is an Augmented Reality zine.

The project will explore the experimental media practices of the women who built the emerging tech we know and love today -- but whose contributions are often erased.

Delighted to be able to tell these stories, and very thankful to @mitlibraries and distinctive collections for making this project possible, and to @bloodmoonboston and @dr.alexketchum for being on the adventure with me.

When the world is a dumpster fire, art holds answers.

Everything is Terrible! Don't Stop Now is a session on why The Arts are the infrastructure to keep us surviving and thriving when the world is a dumpster fire. While technical skills have a shelf life, the durable skills native to the humanities—radical empathy, critical making, ethical inquiry, and the ability to find meaning in ambiguity—are the infrastructure of human resilience.

Join Monica Storss (that's me!) [Northeastern University, MIT, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Xerox] in understanding why you should not give up, and why we must double down on the un-automatable human spirit -- precisely because the world is on fire.
Part of the @newmediawritingprize unconference.

I would like invite you to a session on the frontier of digital storytelling. "Assembling Ghosts: Augmented Reality and Extended Reality Publishing" will explore how the transition from 2D screens to immersive environments isn't just a technical shift, it's also a cultural one. Whether you are a writer, storyteller, developer, or digital scholar, I invite you to come learn how we are assembling a new canon for the emerging spatial age.

Thursday April 9, an AI AMA for anyone in higher ed: professors, TA's, staff, grad students, and anyone in between.

This will be my first workshop as Scholar-In-Residence at Northeastern University's Digital Integration Teaching Initiative. There is a lot of confusion around AI and other digital tools, and a lack of clarity and a lack of non-judgemental spaces people can go to get their tech questions answered. My tenure aims to change this. I want to hold space, for you, to feel empowered about technology.

I hope you join us and get your questions answered in this judgement-free zone. Technology is not neutral, but informational spaces should be. 💜 Description below:

✨ AI is everywhere these days – but what does it really mean? How do you use it in your classroom or pedagogical practice? What is AGI, how do self driving cars drive, what’s a computer vision, and do you need one? In this session, get human answers to your AI questions.
You may be wondering:

How does AI work?
What is the difference between GPT, Open AI, Co-Pilot, Claude?
How do I tell if a student essay is AI generated?
Should I even let students submit AI work?
Should I use AI for grading?
How do I draft a classroom AI policy?

Or you may have larger questions: Is AI sentient? What’s a deathbot? Is AI ethical?

In this session, no question is too big, too small, or too weird for our DITI AI experts.

Let us demystify AI for you as we delve deep into YOUR burning AI questions.

It’s everything you have ever wanted to ask about AI – but have been too afraid to ask. We’re even offering an option for totally 💯 anonymous question submittal - simply show up to the session to hear the answer to your question.

April 9 join us for this no-holds barred virtual AI Q&A session.
April 9, 2026 11:00 AM EST On Zoom
Link:

I'll add the sign up link in the comments too, (or DM me).

Have you ever wanted to understand how to adopt technology for the arts and culture? Come study with me this summer.

Designed for non-technical practitioners as well as advanced technologists, we will explore from taxonomy to tech, understand the art-tech ecosystem, evaluate challenges; apply best-practice frameworks; and identify opportunity and needs, and compare technical solutions for arts and culture. 🎨 🎼 🖊️ 🎵 Whether you want to level up your creative practice, make technological impact for your organization, or understand how to steward the arts and culture in the postdigital turn, this seminar is for you.

The course is part of the Arts Administration & Cultural Entrepreneurship (AACE) at Northeastern University but is open to all who meet graduate entry requirements. Please reach out with any questions.

Plenty of people survive long enough to become witnesses to history. Diamond Dave was different. He kept making culture happen.

He has been called San Francisco’s own Forrest Gump. Dave was somehow one of the original Diggers, part of the Beats, The Punks, the Rainbow gathering, helped start the KPOO Collective, established Pirate Radio in San Francisco, co-founded Food Not Bombs — and was even somehow present for MLK’s “I Have A Dream” speech. Before any of that, he introduced a young Bob Dylan to Woody Guthrie, Jack Kerouac.

Diamond Dave was a friend to many San Francisco poets (me included). He founded Poems Under the Dome, civically activating city spaces for arts and culture. He was a connecting force for the city, and between the cultural tapestries that made San Francisco great.

Diamond Dave Whitaker died on March 2 at 88. With this, San Francisco lost one of the people who carried the city's cultural memory.

Read about this extraordinary life and the vital importance of you and I keeping these legacies alive: https://monicastorss.substack.com/p/diamond-dave-whitaker-remembered

Every tech lab needs a Poet-In-Residence. I've been saying this for years, but the highly visible @ai_anthropic departure of Mrinank Sharma highlighted it.

Yesterday media went BONKERS misrepresenting Sharma's departure. I've written about how the media got it wrong (and how we can get it right) over on my Substack, and the research (link in bio) around WHY Poets are the new tech thought leaders is hot off the presses. If you are a tech R&D lab looking for a poet-in-residence please reach out.

I am pleased to announce my new publication, "The Primacy of Poetics – Why Artists Will Build the Metaverse."

This important research challenges prevailing techno-deterministic views of virtual world development for a creativity-led future and addresses how the future of the metaverse - and work at large - will be driven by artists – and not in ways you may expect! 🎨

Core Research Insights include:
🔮 The Shift to Meaning-Centered Logic: Virtual environments achieve sustainability not through technical sophistication, but through their capacity to generate cultural resonance, participatory mythology, and affective engagement.
🔷 The Rise of the Synthesist: We introduce a new professional archetype—the Synthesist—a leader endowed with "bilateral fluency" who operates natively across both artistic-humanistic and technical-computational registers.
🪢Story-Based Economics: In digital realms where pixels are infinite, value is driven by "narrative gravity" and the human imagination rather than material scarcity.
🎇 Nondisciplinary Leadership: Future innovation lies in the spaces between established fields, necessitating a shift in talent pipelines from skills-based replication toward creativity-centered innovation.

As artificial intelligence and automation rapidly commoditize traditional technical "hard skills"— coding, financial analysis, and systems optimization—the capacities resistant to computational replication emerge as the primary drivers of economic and cultural value.

I have put together a very gentle, approachable Systems Thinking reading list and personal curriculum. At this cultural moment, we are seeing that many infrastructures, scaffolds and things are broken.

We are often taught to treat life like a machine: if a part is broken, you fix it. But when we solve problems with linear thinking, we often create new problems we didn't see coming. We need new modes or approach and inquiry, and Systems Thinking offers just that.

From essential texts from @donellameadows and @adriennemareebrown , to movies and shows, to free courses from @mitocw @mitopenlearning and @johnshopkinssph I've curate a gentle, fun, and free curriculum and reading list, available on my Substack. (and will migrate over to the website soon).

Additionally, I'm making the curriculum available under Creative Commons, so educators of any kind are welcome and empowered to incorporate the curricula into their own pedagogical practices under fair use license.

Systems thinking allows you to look past the "event" to see the "pattern." It’s the art of seeing the invisible connections that hold the world together, and at this inflection point, is more crucial than ever. See the reading list at monicastorss.substack.com
