Hey there! 👋 I'm Suzanne, the heart, soul and keyboard behind The Digital Optimist. Yes folks, the brand is undergoing some shifts. I *was* using the Image Optimist but the reality is that I like to optimize so much more than images, and almost all of what I do is digital. The story is a bit longer than that, so if you’re interested you can read about it on my blog.
For now, I’m here to introduce myself as your entrepreneurial, adventurous, creative, seo, marketing, techy friend. I may add a sprinkle of photography, branding or marketing when we polish up your website and online presence but nothing too crazy. But don’t worry, if you want crazy, I’ve got people for that.

I’m expanding from photography into the world of overall digital optimization. These days we all need more than photos. As someone who's been through the ups and downs of building multiple businesses, I know how important it is to feel seen and heard. That’s why I’m here, to help passionate entrepreneurs not just show up but show off online. Just kidding, I thought that sounded snazzy, we’re not specifically trying to show off. We are, however, aiming to get your business noticed and found by your ideal future clients. Whether you’re an established business owner or just starting out, we’ll make your brand and website sparkle ✨ and get you noticed where it matters.

So, where are you at in your business? What’s your story? I’d love to hear it! 💬

This week, we are featuring two contractors who help support NRT’s communications work: Suzanne Rushton and Ida Cummings.

Suzanne Rushton brings a background in digital marketing, SEO, and website management. She helps make NRT’s online information easier to find, navigate, and use for First Nations, communities, partners, and organizations looking for support.

Ida Magdalena Cummings is a videographer and social media strategist who has been shaping stories online since 2009. Through her business, Wonderful Ida, she supports NRT through impact videos, short-form content, social media strategy, and community-led storytelling.

Together, Suzanne and Ida help strengthen how NRT shares information, tells stories, and connects people to the work being led across BC First Nations communities.

Today I audited two therapist websites.

One of them had nine H1 titles on their home page.

The other one had zero.

Which is worse? 🥁🥁🥁🥁

The answer is multiples are worse than zero.

If the page has a title tag and some copy then you can survive with no H1, search engines will infer the content from other sources.

With multiples it’s confusing, crawlers cannot determine your page topic and your authority is diluted.

Do you know how many H1’s you have?

I talk a lot about SEO but not as much about my life in Nova Scotia. Things are pretty sweet over here on the east coast, especially now that the weather is finally warming up. I recently had a friend visiting from france so I took a few days to explore the region now that summer is almost here!

Please enjoy a south shore sunset, Lunenburg, Peggys Cove, the tulips in my yard, local friends, a cute shop in Mahone Bay, the streets of Halifax where I found a hammock chair and Christin and I’s recent participation in the Bluenose Marathon (they have a 10k distance)! 🏃‍♀️

When’s the last time you updated your website?
Be honest… 👀

If your site still looks the same as it did 3 years ago, you could be losing clients before they even contact you.

Your website should feel fresh, elevated, and actually convert visitors into customers.

Lucky for you… that’s my thing.

Today marks the start of an exciting development in my business. Earlier this year I made a decision to extend my business into the States. There is a huge market down there and American clients don’t pay Canadian taxes, not to mention their dollar goes further. I got my first American client, a friend, in February and we optimized his website and ran Google Ads that were a resounding success (see my testimonials highlight).

Today, I got my first American client who is not someone I have met in person, but whom I met through my new online community. I believe this is the start of something amazing and I can’t wait to see where this goes!

SEO is a slow burn. The long game, if you will. And so is building an SEO business. But once the fire gets burning it stays hot for a long time, and things are definitely heading in the right direction.

AI has distinctive patterns. Do you recognize those patterns in AI? I sure do! If you’re someone who notices AI everywhere, what do you then do with the information being presented?

A recent SEO sprint client uses the Square Platform for his in store POS and website. It has some major pros and cons.

Pros - Inventory and GA4 tracking
Cons - Design and SEO

Let me know if you use Square and what you like or dislike about it!

If only I could hide behind bushes in every shoot I’m in!!

But seriously, using aligned keywords makes the difference between getting found organically, and not. Need help? You know where to find me.
