Apple boxes are one of the most versatile pieces of gear on any set. Raising talent, leveling furniture, propping up equipment, filling negative space, giving a camera operator somewhere to sit between takes. If something needs to be a different height, an apple box is probably the answer.

They come in four sizes: Full, Half, Quarter, and Pancake. Each one progressively flatter than the last.

But film crews also developed shorthand for which orientation to place a full apple in. When someone’s holding something heavy and needs a box placed fast, there’s no time for confusion. New York means stand it tall like the skyline, 20 inches high. Texas or Chicago means flip it to the narrow edge, 12 inches. LA means lay it flat, 8 inches.
