turquoise winter waters in the california central coast 💙 winter is a special time of year here, colder waters slow the bloom of life (algae, phytoplankton, bacteria and other particles) revealing crystal clear juicy worlds below the surface when conditions line up just right.

there’s something about diving into the water and rising back into the sun, like a mirror of the journey we’re all on. we descend to feel the depths of our own humanity, then surface again to share our experiences, comforted by the knowing that the sun had been holding us and beaming through us in every moment.

little light rays beam down from the surface and remind me of the bits of light that have filled me up so deeply in these recent days. at one time, floating at colorless depths reaching for something i knew was above but couldn’t see. and now that i see and im here, im not only filled with color and light but deep gratitude for the depths, since without them i would never understand the impact of my sun filled breaths the surface

this dive shoot i decided to head down 6 hours to catalina island in the middle of the night, slept in my car both ways up and down. just to make it for a day to freedive in one of my favorite kelp forests on earth. seriously yall, you only have one life. do some irresponsible things for the plot, you won’t regret it. thank you so much @farrahhjane for capturing me in my element!!!

the ocean is the cutest little alien world and i’m so glad i get to experience it. seeing a different reef in thailand literally blew my mind. we need to protect this special place.

the art of freediving has shared with me so many valuable lessons

progress doesn’t always require pushing harder! & sometimes you just gotta pause and choose ease over urgency. patience and restraint is key. learning to meet discomfort without panic

ocean magic 🐟 is one of few types of magic that cancels time, i swear i could be out there for hours and it only feels like 30 minutes. tapping into that fish frequency

there’s a lot we can learn from these lil guys

the playfulness, the community, the swiftness in their movements. all tied up in a little salty shiny package

one of the few animals we california divers have to share these cold beaches with. and i mean literally SHARE. like literal square footage. a few times a year they dominate san carlos beach in monterey and close what’s probably one of the most popular diving spots in the country. as well they should! they ARE the original california beach bums

one of my favorite days was rolling up to la jolla cove last summer thinking i was going to have an epic snorkeling day. walked into the biggest surf i’d ever seen at that spot. groups of sea lions catapulting themselves through the crests of each wave, yelping and playing. all different sizes. there was an area of the reef that was open to swimmers. i braced the waves and watched from below as they danced with each other in their cute lil choreography. i held onto a rock at the bottom to just observe for a while, and the next thing i know im face to face with a baby sea lion checking me out.

her lil whiskers and curious eyes so close to mine told me a story that i’d known once before. a story that the ocean tries to remind me of every time im beneath her.

we’re on earth to play!! and cry!! and play some more!! so i try to play with the same joy as these little brown salt rockets whenever im in the water. i firmly believe that if youre not flopping on a rock or splashing in the sea regularly to quell the innate suffering of your human existence, you aren’t living fully enough!!
