In Tbilisi, underpasses are full of traffic noise, incense, counterfeit designer clothes, and xerox machines, where you could copy anything for a few tetri — magazine pages, manga, images you wanted to keep but couldn’t really own.
Lately I’ve been xeroxing pages from photobooks again. Mostly Japanese photographers. Limiting myself to two pages per book, single-sided, notes on the back.

“Working on my thesis on the absurdity of new media formats on TikTok. I am going to be showing one of my photos in Tokyo this October, and some other small projects here and there... I was drawn to the format of Intercom because it allows space for a full-length visual file, and I wanted to play with that. Since I usually use photography as a starting point for my projects, I shaped this into a kind of site-specific listening experience. On the audio side, I tried to balance things I’ve been listening to day-to-day, but it also ended up taking on a bit of a narrative form. I think there’s also a sense of geographic disorientation running through it.”

For the artwork of this volume, Fourslash collaborated with the Georgian artist @deasideaz , whose artistic practice encompasses photography, sculpture, painting, and digital media.
The reference image for the CD cover is a digital photograph of a wild flower field found on a drive through rural Georgia, where long purple flowers, poppies and yellow blossoms blend together with the greenery to create a vibrant celebration of colour and form. After a lengthy sketching process exploring ways to recreate this scene on each CD, the artist (and we) concluded that the process from digital file to physical object should be kept as direct as possible. By printing it on the CD, that is.
Each CD is unique and represents 1/25th of a the photograph. Joyful and generous, they complement the carefully curated music and monochrome package design perfectly. By purchasing a CD, you acquire an original piece of art by Dea Khalvashi, and engage in a conversation with Fourslash about design, music, and the importance of physical objects in an increasingly digital era.
