Today I went for a bike ride and for the first time in my life had the experience of accidentally swallowing a bug so large that it triggered my gag reflex and caused me to cough and dry heave until I ultimately swallowed it. I don’t have any idea what it was.

When is a project finished? I’ve been driving this truck around for a month or so now with the new engine and transmission, but there’s been a few issues I’ve been working on since I first got it running. First was an oil leak from a seal the machine shop that installed it incorrectly, then it was a clogged solenoid that I replaced. Now it’s this variable cam gear that seems to be getting stuck. Pretty soon I’ll be finished with the break in period and I’ll do an oil change, maybe by then the bugs will be fixed, or maybe not.

When I took my first long bike trip, when bikepacking was just cycle touring, the only real choices you had for bags were Jannd and Ortlieb, and Ortlieb was really expensive for me so I got a set of Jannd bags. And for some reason, the only handlebar bag I could find was this dino item. Still works great though.

I found this chainsaw in a garage, disassembled and missing a bunch of parts. I took it home and stripped it down to find it had a seized piston. I bought a new piston and cylinder, rebuilt the engine, and then got everything else needed to use it. Now I’m using it to cut up firewood for our wood stove. It was made in Sweden, and not out of foreign parts, almost every component is labeled made in Sweden. Now it has a little home with all its little accessories. 🤗🇸🇪

Walley passed away yesterday after 12 wonderful years. We got to make sure he had a really happy and playful couple of days this last week, and he went peacefully with us at his side. He was a part of my daily life for 8 years since Marin moved in and I’m thankful I got to have my time with him. He was perfect and I loved him very much.

Went to the junkyard yesterday to pull some fuel lines to finish up my truck, and spotted this MG TD kit car with a body made in Fargo. My guess is it was sold by an estate after languishing in a garage for decades, the engine bay didn’t look like it had been driven in a long time.

Starting to swap the engine and transmission from my truck. It’s been good to me for 13 years so I decided to try to keep it going. I haven’t done a job this big before.

Today I got the front end of my 1970 Volvo 1800 pulled and stripped. It made a huge mess but went fairly smoothly. The big metal part in the middle is the subframe/crossmember. Because Volvo originally designed this chassis in the mid 50’s, the suspension all connects to this piece which then connects to the body with 6 big bolts. Volvo didn’t go to a full modern unibody chassis where the suspension attaches directly to the body until the venerable 240 series in 1974. I even got the lower wishbone bushings pressed out using my new air powered hydraulic press which was super satisfying. I’ve ripped them out with a hammer and hacksaw before and it takes hours. The press took about 30 minutes for all 4. Now I will order all new suspension components, and spend half a day welding in reinforcements before taking the major parts to be powder coated.

Took a day off work yesterday to go on a little trip with Juniper. I’d been feeling frayed lately and it was nice to escape Richmond in August. We hiked to Humpback Rocks and got nice and tired.
