Small-scale, fiercely independent journalism rarely gets recognition when awards are handed out, but it's vital in our communities—especially this year. So I made an award and am thrilled to announce @unraveledpress and @latacoas the inaugural winners of the Snooping Newsie Award for Excellence in Independent Journalism. Full story at the link in bio.

Spotty, you ate a million mysteries off the ground and loved every one of them. You were afraid of the rain and the dark. You were always there with us, wherever we went. You will be missed.

On my blog, I wrote about the Klan in the 1920s, which was huge and popular and everywhere. There was a Kiddie Klan. A women's auxillary. They had their hands on every lever of power, from local cops to Washington DC. It must have felt impossible to imagine that they could ever be beaten. Which might feel familiar right now.

And so I wrote about one person who tried, and won. And I wrote about one simple truth: fascism always fails.

Just @akilahh causing good trouble in Northern Kentucky, as Rebel Spirit becomes an issue in the local school board race. The work we've put into this pod is enormous and it's so incredible to see it having immediate impact. Are you listening yet? Eight episodes out, fully ready for you to binge. Link in my bio or just search for Rebel Spirit wherever you listen to stuff.

Rebel Spirit, the incredible podcast I've been working on with @akilahh and @ebaquet for the last YEAR is finally out. Can't wait for you all to share in this journey we've been on to change Akilah's high school mascot. It's an amazing, twisting, moving and also sometimes quite funny story of racism, community, and how real change happens.

Here's Elizabeth, Akilah, and I almost exactly one year ago sitting in the stands at the Boone County High School football field watching BCHS lose by a lot in their homecoming game. This was the very first high school sporting event I had ever attended.

Episode One out now, available on all podcast platforms or at the link in my bio.

Today is the birthday of Steve Albini, legendary recording engineer, musician, and human. He's someone who transformed the underground music scene not just in Chicago, where he operated his studio Electrical Audio, but worldwide. But more than that he was a person who never stopped learning and growing. In honor of his birthday, and to say #thankyoustevealbini I've excepted a short part of the lengthy interview we did with him in Punk Planet #26. Full excerpt on my blog (in bio):

"The way I operate now—and this is what's bred contentment in me—is that I know how I'm going to behave. I know how I'm going to interact with other people and weigh the importance of the things in my life and the things I have to do for other people. I know the process that I'm going to undergo. But I don't know the results—they're going to be a surprise.

"That's true of almost everything in my life. I know how I'm going to live, but I don't know what my life will entail. Like the band that I'm in: I know how we work as a band, I know how we interact and how we get from having no song to having a song or from starting a show to finishing a show. I know how we're going to get through it, but what happens along the way is always a surprise.

"The fact that I enjoy being surprised is what makes doing things that way very easy for me. Some people like to have things mapped out and then execute the plan. They plan on making plans, they make plans, and then they execute their plans. Most of what I do is based on the concept that I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know what the results of many of these experiments are going to be, but I know how I'm going to conduct the experiments. I know why these things are important to me and why I'm going to be behaving in a certain way."
