‘SPHYNX’: A MANIFESTO BY @DANIELROSEBERRY ON THE FALL/WINTER 2026-2027 COLLECTION:
‘In three weeks, “Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art,” will open at the V&A museum in London. It’s a full retrospective of Elsa Schiaparelli’s life and work, one that suggests that among the ways she transformed fashion was by being the first designer to question the medium of fashion itself. For Elsa, a dress wasn’t just a dress. A dress could have drawer pulls on its pockets, symbolizing the hidden dimensions of the female psyche. A dress could have a skeleton embroidered on it, suggesting the body had been turned inside out. It was a radical, risky assertion then, and it still is today: Fashion is a major business, but it’s also the ultimate forum of self-expression and fantasy. Both things are true at the same time—but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t an inherent tension between these two truths.
The same is also true for Schiaparelli as a house. Like many heritage houses, it’s both blessed and limited by the recognizability and endurance of its codes.
That tension—between fashion as a business and fashion as a dream factory; between what a dress should be and what a dress can be; between who a woman appears to be and who a woman is; between the weight of the maison’s history and how it exists now—has informed this entire collection. In every piece, in every accessory, there’s an apparent contradiction. Take, for example the look which I call “impossible knitwear”: traditional Aran cable knits juxtaposed with panels of illusion tulle, which creates the effect of something heavy that seemingly floats on the body. Or our liquid plisse silk-blend fabric, topped with a clear lamination, and made into spiral cut gowns and separates. Again and again, we used performance fabric to try to represent the authenticity of the maison - Elsa, after all, was one of the first couturiers to embrace jersey.’ __ Daniel Roseberry

SCHIAPARELLI HAUTE COUTURE SPRING/SUMMER 2026 by @DANIELROSEBERRY
‘The emotional core of this collection was revealed to me while I was on a creative retreat outside of Rome. One afternoon, I arranged a last-minute tour to see the Sistine Chapel.
If you’ve been there, you know that the first thing you see isn’t the ceiling, but the walls, densely painted by an army of artists in the years before Michelangelo began his work in 1508.
But crane your neck skyward, and thought stops. Feeling begins. That’s because forty years later, one man came in and singlehandedly changed art forever. Here is agony and ecstasy comingled, terrible and exquisite. He didn’t tell us what happened, but instead gave his audience permission on how to feel when they looked at art.
It woke up the world. And 500 years later, it woke me up, too. I stopped thinking for the first time in years of how something should look, but instead about how I feel when creating it.
That revelation informed every part of this collection. Sharp strokes and rapid squiggles became scorpion tails. I drew stingers and snake teeth, chimeraed archetypes of couture with venom. I knew these reptilian creatures, these “infantas terribles,” as I called them, would become the heroes of the collection, our ceiling: they’d be birds of flight, defying gravity, bold in color, explosive in silhouette.
So many people ask me what the point is of couture. It’s certainly not to create clothing for daily life. But for me, couture allows me to connect with the hopeful adolescent I once was, the one who decided to not go into medicine or finance or law, but to chase that singular fantasy that fashion can still provide. Let the rest of the year be about reality. But nothing is more powerful—or timeless—or for me, more now, than getting to unchain my imagination…and, I hope, yours.
