Some photos from the installation of three sculptures at the Brilliant Bamboo parklet in Stoke, led by artist Spencer Jenkins, with local artists Tash McHugh, Dan Southward, Richard Redwin, Dan Higgs & myself facilitating.
We faced a few challenges when fixing the statues into the ground as the rough, post-industrial brownfield site is pretty unforgiving unless you're as determined as the weeds. Still, we all learned something & developed skills, helping the natural materials adapt to their rebuilt forms.
The three new additions to the parklet help to modify the space, closing the gap over the central yard.

Descriptions of the works from the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens website:

Bamboo Phoenix - Tim Miller
A symbol of freedom and transformation.
Crafted from bamboo, this soaring sculpture reflects our desire to rise above life’s pressures — light, strong, and full of hope.

Breaking Point – Alisha Miller
A curvaceous, layered sculpture expressing the physical and emotional experience of mid-life womanhood. Split bamboo strands explore strength, vulnerability, and beauty — all held in delicate balance.

INVERTED - Spencer Jenkins
A towering bamboo and steel structure visualising height, balance, and circular design. Every component can be reused, making it a true statement of sustainability.

Our good good friend Mr Daniel Wiggins spoke to us back in march about his current project ‘Kitsune Saggars‘. He’s currently working as an Artist in Residence, at Stoke Market from b arts’ artist in residence programme.

(See bio for link to more info on that)

Daniel Wiggins is a multidisciplinary artist based in Stoke-on-Trent, UK. He works in various mediums including film, photography, ceramics, and sculpture. His art often explores themes of urban decay and restoration, focusing on tangible forms and conceptual ideas.

Wiggins has been involved in several community projects. Notably, he contributed to “Sounds From Another Town,” a soundscape project during the COVID-19 lockdown that featured the voices of isolated residents in Stoke-on-Trent. This project utilized public phone boxes to create a collective auditory experience across the town.
Additionally, Wiggins participated in “The View from Where I Stand,” where he showcased his work in photography.

Wiggins is the current featuredartist in a residency at the Stoke Indoor Market, where he is presenting his project “Kintsugi Saggars,” a project emphasizing the beauty of repaired pottery, inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi.

You can find Dan over on his art insta @danielfwiggins.

You can listen to Dan’s interview on the episode Treasure on Spotify, or the b arts website … L!nk in B!o.
