Somehow, her private self is even more otherworldly and spectacular than the iconic public persona.

Sunday night, I DJed her impromptu Hollywood Bowl afterparty. All vinyl. I brought her deep cuts from my own collection (rare, beloved records I’ve spent years searching for) and watched her light up as we danced through her legacy together.

Top three DJ nights of my life. Maybe number one.

She was impossibly gracious. Insistent that we shared a feline quality. Maybe it was my dress. Or natural hair. She improvised a song about us on the spot. If anyone captured “You’re a tiger, I’m a tiger” on video, please tag me. I’ll hold the moment close forever, but actually seeing it would be unspeakably incredible.

I deeply envy people who can just carry on right now as if the world isn’t… doing whatever this is. Truly. What a skill.

Meanwhile I’m over here having anxiety-inducing conversations with my community about war, politics, rights, an uncertain future, and then going straight into a party to DJ. Emotional whiplash.

But @andresrigal and birthday girl @djmichellepesce both keep reminding me of something important: the spaces we build matter. Nightlife isn’t frivolous. It’s where people find each other, exhale, dance, flirt, feel less alone. Especially now.

So perhaps the most useful thing I can do this week is the thing I actually know how to do.

Hold space. Play music. Let people dance.

And next week we’re hosting a party with @peachesnisker at @uncleolliespenthouse. Yes, that Peaches. She’ll be there. It’s her party.
