Special guest with @dabookjoint! We are so excited to welcome Frederick Smith to @chicagopridebookfest on June 27th at @soundgrowler in Tinley Park. Originally from Detroit, @fsmith827 is the author of seven romance novels set in L.A. and San Francisco that feature Black Queer characters. A higher education professional by day, Frederick Smith does Student Life and Diversity & Inclusion work at SF State.

Smith is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and Loyola University Chicago. Smith worked as a TV anchor and reporter before making a career move to Higher Education and Student Affairs… and now fiction writing. A finalist for the PEN Center Emerging Voices Fellowship, and a participant in the VONA (Voices of our Nations) novel seminar, Smith is an advocate for social justice and equity issues.

Two out of the fourteen books I have read this year. I love #memoirs because they allow you to get in the mind of what makes a people who they are. They’re also life lessons, so you can learn from other people’s mistakes.

“Misunderstood” from @theofficialai3 was a great read. Allen Iverson, while he never won a championship, was the underdog of the NBA, and changed the face of basketball, despite getting so much unnecessary hate. That #crossover is still legendary.

“Phases” from @brandy is another great read. Brandy changed the face of music in the last few decades, and deserves her flowers. What else I can say about her, she is the #vocalbible and I’m glad she was able to tell her story.

I got these two books from @dabookjoint in Chicago and @baldwinandcompany in New Orleans. Please go check them out, and support them if you haven’t. Please support independent bookstores, especially black owned bookstores. Reading is fundamental, and you can learn a lot from a book, especially a memoir.
