Why @katiepizzalee is important.2025 began with a difficult admission: we lost.
It was a brutal setback for a lot of people in my circle. Particularly, for my wife, who has dedicated her life to changing how women leaders are perceived and regularly pushed aside. It also marked the second time we’d had to explain an improbable defeat to our two daughters.
I told my wife, the message was clear: none of this mattered. I told her it was time to let it go. Cash in while we still have a chance to retool our lives. Make better money. Work less hard.
She refused. In fact, she doubled down, as fighters do.
I went the other way.
I tuned it all out and started taking commercial work. Easy, consistent, predicable jobs that pay well.
It put a strain on our relationship almost immediately. Aside from small talk at dinner and the logistics of raising our kids, we diverted.
Deep down, I knew this was going to come to a head, I just didn’t know how or when.
2025 is going to suck.
In March, I got a call for one of those commercial jobs. A new frozen pizza brand. Perfect. My old friend @anthonygaddis had just signed on as creative director and was crushing it there. Let’s go make some cool looking content. I’m down. Get me out of here.
But, as we all know, the universe works in mysterious ways.
That multi-million dollar frozen pizza brand is the brain child of the lighting bolt that is Katie Lee.
I knew nothing about her. Most people don’t, and they should.
We’re going to change that.
“The Wild Woman doesn’t heal you by making you calm; she heals you by making you alive.”
From Women Who Run With The Wolves, by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, a book handed to me by my wife at dinner later that month.
Happy New Year. 2026 is gonna be… Wild.

Today at Howard University, some of my peers are gathering to remember journalist Ron Harris, who died last month in the Atlantic after being separated from his sailboat off the coast of Georgia. Ron was one of those guys who always pulled it off.
So, when the news came that he was missing, we didn’t count him out. It seemed more likely he’d be rescued by a passing freighter, befriend the crew, and stow away for a year than what really happened. Anyone who knew him and heard the news had a wilder, more colorful story forming in their minds than the truth. That’s the kind of man he was. The alternative stories we were building in our minds were all insane, funny, and above all; humane.
Then the word came. After a few moments of shock came disbelief; the kind that was always present when you were around him. And then, a smile. I know we all had it. No way. Ron’s going to be fine.
I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about that since his death was confirmed. Why did I always smile when I thought of Ron Harris? Even when I was mad at him, I couldn’t stay mad. Impossible.
Why?
I spent a lot of time very close to Ron Harris in some of humanity’s most dire conditions: confusion, exhaustion, moments of terror, deep sadness, unfairness, randomness; the kinds of scenarios where your mettle is tested for real. He was always kind. Even when he didn’t need to be, even when I thought he shouldn’t have been. On reflection, I can honestly say he was one of the best human beings I knew. I have dozens of detailed stories to illustrate this, stories I’ll share with his family, because if I know Ron, he probably never told them. He probably didn’t think much of it. Because he cared so much about the people he was working with, the people he was working for, and the people he was writing about.
And in the end, that’s all that really matters. We love you and we will miss you Ron.
