This Feb. 4th I’ll be 🥁ing and dancing with the new life new wave crew @actually_new_life at the @airlinerbar in east LA. Come get romantic and nostalgic to the sounds of massive synths, brainworm melodies, and phat beats. Get lifted by heavy drum machinery but don’t operate them under the influence. Some 🥩 and 🥔 for yall. Here’s a lil clip of a drum sess we did yesterday at my spot @deckhousestudios for my brotha and good amigo @actuallyadog and his project @actually_new_life. This is simple first pass of the song with just drums and with parts still being worked out. It’s a fun song - driving new wave post punk lil rocker. Will come out this year sometime. Audio is from my iPhone and not the studio mix. Cameras are from my iPhone and some old GoPros lying around that I decided to set up and see how they looked. Let me know what ya think? I might need to upgrade sometime soon. 🤙

Howdy yall. Here’s a lil project I took on for fun to fix and modify a Aiwa DM-10 vintage microphone that I got thrifting in Texas a while back ago. This mic is built tough and has some weight to it. The switch didn’t work so l pulled it out not realizing the wires were impossible to get to in order to solder... So l chopped it in half. It’s much cuter now.

Designed primarily for broadcast, PA, and vocal applications, the DM-10 features a high-impedance dynamic capsule, a rugged metal body, and a naturally mid-forward, slightly compressed tone. Sonically, it sits closer to classic lo-fi broadcast and early rock ‘n’ roll microphones-great for vocals, harmonica, guitar amps, and anything that benefits from grit and attitude rather than clinical clarity.

*Polar Pattern: Omnidirectional (picks up sound from all around)
*Impedance: Available in high and low versions (around 50 s or 50 kg)

How to tune a drum? It’s easy. This is me setting up my 70s blue vistalite snare with a new (barely used) head along with some minor tweaks. It’s an interesting drum and a tad unwieldy. I wonder if the shortened top half (recut for bearing edges I’m guessing) is causing it to be so. It’s a unique drum and I still can’t believe I won it via a @luke_perine giveaway 🥳.

This my method and from experience the standard way of changing a head and tuning a drum.

Morning folks. I am getting my new Vistalite up and ready for recording and in the process I thought I would share some vids. Here’s part one of what needs to be done - putting a hole in the bass drum resonant side for easy microphone and dampening materials access. It’s fairly easy to do - once you know how to use the right tool (puncture the cutting wheel into the head also). I have seen people use other methods too: such as heating a metal ring or cup and burning a hole, putting the reinforcement ring on and just box cutting around it, etc. What method do you prefer?
