This workshop considers unavailable archives and missing evidence in life writing.

How to write what’s not seemingly there, what’s not known or knowable?

How do we make memoir from personal and historical absences?

Through facilitated discussions, writing exercises, and sharing of resources, we will contemplate the limits of the memoir genre and explore strategies for working through, around, and against its conventions.

Kyo Maclear is the author of Birds Art Life and Unearthing: A Story of Tangled Love and Family Secrets.

Vinh Nguyen is the author of the speculative memoir The Migrant Rain Falls in Reverse and the academic monograph Lived Refuge: Gratitude, Resentment, Resilience.

All donations for this workshop go to @thesameerproject’s medical care campaign. Which provides emergency medical treatment and other life-sustaining support for displaced Palestinians in Gaza.

All proceeds from purchases of Kyo’s and Vinh’s books from our bookshop also go to this campaign.

“It’s true that my story is a small story. It’s a little story. And I don’t want to be a cultural guide.”

April 30, 2025 marks 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War. The historic conflict led to more than one million people being displaced — and forced to leave their home countries of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Toronto writer Vinh Nguyen was among those who fled Vietnam by boat along with his mother and siblings — but his father, who left separately, mysteriously vanished.

In his memoir, The Migrant Rain Falls in Reverse, he retraces his family’s journey from post-war Vietnam to Canada — and how this moment in history resonates with experiences in the diaspora today.

Head to cbcbooks.ca to find out more about how he wrote it.

Happy publication day to @cousinvinnhy’s THE MIGRANT RAIN FALLS IN REVERSE 📚

THE MIGRANT RAIN FALLS IN REVERSE is an unconventional memoir of conjuring the uncertain past and a long-lost homeland, and a vital document of one family’s journey through world history. It takes readers on a poignant tour of disappeared refugee camps, abandoned family homes, and the lives that could have been. As the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War approaches, this powerful memoir is timelier and more important than ever, illuminating the stories, real and imagined, that become buried in the rubble of war.

✨ “Inventive . . . [Nguyen] nimbly transports readers to a blurry past and immerses them in the biographical ambiguities of life as a refugee.” — @publisherswkly

✨“Lyrical . . . Poignantly embodies a life marked by an unsatisfiable longing.” — @kirkus_reviews

✨“Gorgeous and searching, mournful and luminescent . . . a gorgeous meditation on being, remembering, and becoming: a stunning work through and through.” —Bryan Washington, author of FAMILY MEAL
