I was pleased to find time in my @watchesandwonders agenda to head over to @timetowatches.official where I met Nicolas Freudiger, CEO and co-founder of @idgenevewatches , the very first impact-native luxury watch brand that benefits both society and planet. While many luxury brand reports celebrate their so-called sustainability efforts there are few that can honestly claim to be anything but self-serving. Besides ethical material sourcing and application, and more efficient energy use, finite resources are still extracted from the planet and carbon credits purchased to offset the guilt. Six-year-old ID Geneva on the other hand has a mission to lead by example and inspire a systemic shift in the industry towards a more regenerative, circular economy. They produced the first watch case in 100% reprocessed stainless steel – grade 4441, referred to as the “Rolls Royce of stainless steel” – using a solar furnace. They have used repurposed ETA movements and apparently only 3% of their watches use virgin materials. Watch straps are made from renewable bio materials such as grape residue, and banana skin fibre – all as aesthetically appealing and durable as traditional woven fabric and leather straps. Their newest Circular A “IS IT CHOCO-TOO-LATE?” special edition is part of a collab campaign with artisanal ice lolly makers Paleta Loca and Climate Basecamp. The associated “Save the Flavours” campaign uses everyday products to highlight the fragile ecosystems used to create them and which are now endangered by our unsustainable practices. The timepiece features a chocolate coloured dial with hand-hammered effect and a strap made from recycled corn residue. #earthday #regenerativedesign #circulareconomy♻️

Valley of Invention: The @jaegerlecoultre Made of Makers programme weaves narratives between time and art through collaboration with visionary artists and artisans from fields outside watchmaking whose creative practice resonates with that of the Maison’s devotion to craft, creativity and precision. I met young two-Michelin-starred Chef Gilles Varone @gillesvarone at the @jaegerlecoultre Cafe @watchesandwonders who took me on an experimental gastronomic journey through four bites of absolute delight, which delicately harmonised the flavours of Swiss cheese and wild ingredients foraged in the Vallée de Joux - the home of JLC.
The Made of Makers programme sees classical art forms and techniques not as relics, but as living, evolving sources of innovation, much like watchmaking itself, showing how tradition can inspire contemporary expression. To date, the programme has given impetus to the careers of visual artists, chefs, musicians, and perfumers.

Quietly acknowledging the 100th anniversary of their legendary waterproof Oyster case, the @rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 in yellow Rolesor with slate grey dial is a magnificent and rare interpretation of a gold-and-steel material combination, featuring a yellow gold bezel on steel case and Oyster bracelet completely in steel. The Twinlock crown is yellow gold with “100” in relief. On the dial, “100 years” replaces “Swiss Made”, and “Rolex” and the square tips of each five-minute marker are presented in emblematic green. Waterproof to 100m.
Inside is the self-winding manufacture Calibre 3230.

@ressence_watches Type 11 is billed as their most complete watch to date. It is the newest take on their pebble-shaped silhouette and “hands-free” time-reading concept. However, the big story for Ressence is inside the Type 11: their first in-house movement, the calibre RW-01. The Type 11 has a polished grade 5 titanium 41mm diameter pebble-shaped case with double-domed sapphire, and characteristic caseback lever for manual winding and time-setting. Viewing aperture for movement on the caseback. Water resistant to 30m. The convex titanium dial has a 100mm radius and features orbiting hours, minutes, seconds discs, and a new patented power reserve indication (60-hours) with tiny ceramic micro-balls.
New Ressence Werk calibre RW-01 designed specifically to power the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) module. The RW-01 will ultimately replace the historically used and heavily customised ETA 2892/2 or ETA 2824-2 base movements in all models, and provide a seamless integration between powerhouse and display.

Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux 40mm in polished and satin-finished stainless steel with platinum knurled bezel. This is the most elegant and discrete chronograph, featuring disappearing hands. Completes a trilogy that includes the magnificent GMT Rattrapante and Minute Rattrapante.
At rest, the timepiece is a three-hand Tonda PF. The first press of the mono-pusher at 7:30 deploys the three rhodium-plated chronograph hands which perform an instantaneous flyback to 12 o’clock, where they are immediately set in motion. Simultaneously, the rose gold hour and minute hands of civil time appear. A second press stops the chronograph to indicate the measured time. A third press realigns the rhodium-plated hands precisely with the rose gold hands of current time, and the seconds hand resumes its natural motion. Also features a signature hand-crafted Grain d’Orge guilloché dial rendered in Mineral Blue, and knurled platinum bezel. Polished and satin-finished steel. Water resistance to 100m. Inside is the automatic Calibre PF053 integrated column-wheel chronograph movement, beating at 28800 vph (4 Hz) and offering a 60-hour power reserve.

Resonating with the 'mother mind' -enchanting new creations by @andiledyalvane and collaborator @nkosenathikoela. These two creative forces were the instrumental spark for my recent MPhil journey in deeper listening and the radical shift in the ways I now encounter our world. Rewilding Minds: Deep Listening as a spark for radical systemic change
Transmuting the characteristics of context through conscious deep listening - to sound, memory, history, nature, geography - so eloquently into built form, these are just a few of the inspired site-specific sculptures produced by 18 groups made up of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students from the School of Explorative Architecture. This was part of a Vertical Studio project initiated by meditative listening practices and a recent talk I gave them on my MPhil research in sustainability transitions. It is such a pity that these magnificent works were only on display in Van Riebeeck Park, Oranjezicht, for one day
