How a Parisian suburb created its own AFCON 🇫🇷🏆
@hashimotban is on the hunt for football’s soul. And after travelling to Colombia for one of South America’s fiercest street football tournaments, his journey continues in the outskirts of Paris. Where, every year, the city’s African diaspora come together for the Coup d’Aulnay des Nations — a community tournament inspired by AFCON itself. Featuring flair by the bucket load, as you’d expect from one of Europe’s greatest talent hotbeds.

Tonight, Barcelona can win La Liga by getting a result at home to Real Madrid. That puts us in mind of another decisive clash between the two: the May 2009 Clasico in Pep Guardiola’s first season, when Barca simply ripped Real to pieces in their own backyard.
Madrid were 19 games unbeaten heading into the game since losing at the Camp Nou, naturally. They’d won 18 of them. All the pressure was on Barca who were apparently losing their grip having managed a meagre 0-0 at home to Chelsea days earlier. But the Blaugrauna were merciless at the Bernábeu, as if they’d let Real catch up merely to set the stage for this destruction.
Braces for Henry and Messi, a centre-back double from Puyol and Piquet. 2-6 all told. The title was all but Barca’s but even that felt secondary. Their statement of other-worldly dominance over their great rivals meant much more. Days later, that tricky Chelsea tie was overcome too… in the very last second. Pep Guardiola’s definitely had worse weeks.

Yes, that really did happen. In March 1976, Pelé played for Team USA against England. But it wasn’t just O Rei who surprisingly turned out for the Stars and Stripes. Bobby Moore and Giorgio Chinaglia, also recent signings to the North American Soccer League, were selected to represent the USA in the Bicentennial Cup to play against England, Brazil, and Italy.
The tournament was supposed to be a showpiece which saw the US take on the world’s best teams and spread the gospel of soccer to the American public. It didn’t quite go to plan. The US lost all three of its games, including against Brazil, where Pelé elected not to play against his national team.
“We only practised together twice,” Pele told the Washington Post. “There was a great deal of confusion because we weren’t used to each other, particularly on the defence.” A fitting summary of a failed footballing experiment.

I’ve won… but at what cost?’ The worst wins in football. You don’t just do your rivals a favour; you hand them the title.
When the players’ pride comes up against the fans’ contempt, something has to give, and in these instances, the fans had to grin and bear it. By no means a complete list, tell us any we’ve missed, and we might do a part two.

A very important discovery from Mr. International Football himself, Eli Mengem. Can you believe that between 1930 and 1998, not a single Superior Player of the Match award was given out? It’s 580 games. 68 years. There’s going to be lots more on this project coming soon, and we can’t wait for you tell us which FIFA World Cup™ performances prior to 2002 you think should be awarded.
