Hey there!🌿

If you’re new here and hoping to grow more beautiful container gardens, this is a great place to start.

Over the years, I’ve realized most container gardening success comes back to a handful of foundational concepts: drainage, sunlight, watering, plant combinations, and learning how to build fullness.

So I pulled together 10 beginner-friendly tips I wish more people knew before they started planting.

I’ll pin this one to the top of my feed so it’s easy to come back to whenever you need it🌿

WELCOME to the new folks who’ve recently joined me here, and hello again to those who’ve been with me for a while! It feels like a good time to reintroduce myself.

I’m Steph, founder of Contained Creations, and I’m here to share inspiration and guidance that will help YOU create extraordinary container gardens!

I was born and raised in Morristown, NJ. I came to Richmond, VA for college and have lived here ever since. I began a career as a financial analyst, then project manager, before staying home to raise our kids. My husband and I have 3 daughters and 2 Corgis, Henry and Coco, 🐶 who occasionally make an appearance in my videos.

I love getting my hands dirty and trying new plant combinations in pots! For 10 years, I designed, installed, and maintained container gardens professionally for clients across Richmond, VA. In 2022, I transformed Contained Creations into a *new* business focused on teaching others to create their own beautiful designs.

Here on Instagram, I love to show you the possibilities and give you information and tips to help you achieve these looks. I also LOVE partnering with other companies in the indusry to bring you the best plants, pots, gear, and decor for creating elegant outdoor spaces.

Through my website, I offer a collection of online classes that guide you in planting containers for each season. I also offer FREE guides, planter recipes, a newsletter, a blog, and answers to FAQs. I hope you’ll visit me there and see what it’s all about!

Please let me know if there's ever something specific you'd like to see. I’m happy to share my ideas and experience with you.

Thank YOU for being here!🪴

🪴Comment “POTS” and I’ll send you the link to my FREE Planter Shopping Guide!

🚫Please stop wasting money on pots that don’t work!

One of the most common mistakes I see homeowners make is selecting planters that are either too small or too big for their space.

Another common mistake is planters that don’t match a home’s architectural style and exterior color palette.

If any of this rings a bell, it might be time to upgrade your planters🤔

Get my FREE Planter Shopping Guide and see how easy it is to find the right planters for you!

Caladiums! 🌱➡️ Swipe to see how I’ve used them in container gardens with different light exposures ⬇️ Read on for the details.

A few posts back, I shared some of my favorite elephant ears for summer containers. Even though they’re related, caladiums deserve their own moment.

I rely on caladiums to bring bold color and striking leaf shapes to arrangements, especially in shady spots where flowers can sometimes struggle.

A few things I’ve learned growing them in Virginia:

🤍 White varieties glow in dark corners and covered porches.

🩷 Pink varieties pair beautifully with begonias, impatiens, torenia, and ivy.

🌤️ While caladiums are often used to brighten shade containers, several varieties like Aaron, Carolyn Whorton, Royal Flush, and Sweetheart can actually handle morning sun… sometimes a little more.

💧 In containers, they prefer evenly moist soil, never soggy. I usually plant them slightly high in the pot to improve drainage around the tubers.

They typically serve as a filler in my designs, but in smaller pots, they can absolutely become the thriller.

And as you swipe, you’ll notice I never plant them alone 😉

To create a cottage container garden, start with flowers that hold special meaning or memories for you 🌸 #BeaconImpatiensPartner

Pull out a vintage planter and fill it to the brim with sweet blooms. I’m using @beaconimpatiens because they remind me of my childhood neighbor’s shade garden 🩷🤍❤️

I could see the beds of impatiens from my bedroom window, and I took pride in watering them when the neighbor was out of town. They were always so happy and colorful, and they definitely helped spark my love of gardening.

Today, I still choose impatiens when I want containers to feel nostalgic, romantic, and full.

Beacon® Impatiens bring that cottage charm, but they’re also highly resistant to downy mildew, which makes them a dependable choice.

It’s also hard to get this much color in the shade all summer long, and these absolutely light up a covered porch.

Look for Beacon Impatiens where you shop for summer annuals! This color is called Violet Shades 💜

And I’d love to know…do you have a favorite flower memory?

The formula =
1 evergreen shrub
3 of the same upright flower
3 of the same textured foliage
3 of the same contrasting foliage
3 of the same trailing flower

Place the smaller plants in a repeating pattern around the shrub.

Save this for your next planting day. Then put it on repeat 💚

Had the pleasure of refreshing a few containers at 20 Tempsford Lane before this beautiful home hit the market today🏡

Tucked into a lush, private setting south of Cary, this property has quiet elegance and incredible curb appeal. See @winnjenkinsrealestate for listing details and to schedule your visit.

I may be slightly biased, but the containers are worth seeing in person 😉

Lavender might be the perfect choice for a single-plant container garden 💜 #MonroviaPlantsPartner

This week, May 11 - 18, is @MonroviaPlants Lavender Week!
We’re celebrating all the reasons to love lavender: beautiful blooms, silvery evergreen foliage, incredible fragrance, pollinator appeal, natural deer & rabbit resistance, and surprisingly low maintenance care.

I’m planting Monrovia’s ‘Anouk Purple Medley,’ a Spanish variety with deep violet flower spikes topped by soft purple flags.

A few things that help:
• Choose a breathable pot material, like unglazed terra cotta
• Amend potting mix with coarse sand to improve drainage
• Elevate pots with risers or feet so excess water fully escapes
• Give lavender at least 6 hours of direct sun daily
• Let the soil dry slightly between waterings

If your summers are especially hot and humid, try Monrovia’s ‘Phenomenal’ variety, which is bred to handle those steamy conditions.

Lavender lovers, I’d love to know what varieties you grow!

Elephant Ears! ➡️ Swipe through to see how I’ve used them. Read on for more info…

A few posts back, I featured 3 of my favorite #palms for container gardens.

Now let’s chat about another tropical source of height for summer planters: Alocasia and Colocasia, aka Elephant Ears.

🌿Alocasia
• leaves reach upward
• thick, glossy foliage
• usually prefer partial shade (but I’ve had some success in full sun)
• well-draining potting mix

🌱Colocasia
• leaves hang downward
• matte foliage
• usually prefer full sun (but I’ve had some success in shade)
• tolerates wet feet

I’ve sourced these everywhere from wholesale growers, to nurseries, big box stores, and even grocery stores.

I don’t have one specific variety I reach for over and over again; in truth, I tend to grab what strikes me, read the plant tags for details, and build my designs from there.

Caladiums are part of the Elephant Ear family, too, but I have another post coming up that will talk about those!👏🏻

🤫Confession: I’ve never really been a pansy person.

But I went all-in on these window boxes because I wanted color for Easter brunch, and pansies were the safest (and most available) option at the time

What I wasn’t expecting was this much excitement 4 weeks later!

Maybe it’s the weather, the soil enhancer, or a combination of both, but I’ve never had pansies put on a show like this.

Feeling a little obsessed… and a little lazy. The drip lines are handling the watering, and I’ve barely deadheaded. But maybe I’m a pansy person now?🤷‍♀️

Anyone else having a big pansy season?

Peonies and roses stole the show at #RVA’s Westhampton loop of @historicgardenweek 🌸

Thank you to the generous homeowners and garden clubs for the warm hospitality and so much beautiful inspiration!

Favorite moments:
• garden rooms
• layered, meandering borders
• breathtaking floral arrangements by the garden clubs (no photos allowed indoors, so you’ll have to take my word for it 😆)
• touring with a dear friend… and running into old friends and new along the way

Tagging all accounts I can, but please chime in if I’ve missed anyone! @russellcombsdesign @janiemolsterdesigns @greenwaygardens @boxwoodgardenclub @jamesrivergardenclub @3choptgardenclub @tuckahoegardenclub

What was your favorite part of Historic Garden Week?

If you want a balcony you love coming home to, start with a railing planter that lets you build an entire garden without taking up valuable floor space. #HooksandLatticePartner

💬Comment SHOP and I’ll send you the link + my code for 20% off ALL planters, window boxes, and hanging baskets. Offer expires May 6, so don’t wait!

I’m always blown away by the quality of planters from @hooksandlattice. The finish is impeccable, and the hanging hooks made it easy to mount on this metal railing. They also offer an adjustable bracket to fit standard 2x4” or 2x6” railings.

The details:
📏Railing is 9 ft long and I used a 6 ft planter (⅔ the length). Smaller sizes available.
☀️Balcony faces southeast and enjoys sun for most of the day.
🌿Plants used:
•White Dipladenia
•Dahlia ‘Venti™ PinkBurst’
•Lantana ‘Bandana® Pink Improved’
•Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost®’
•Evolvulus ‘Blue My Mind®’
•Variegated Vinca

I’d love to hear how you make your outdoor spaces a place you love at the end of the day!
