Connie Wang
OH MY MOTHER! out now

When I started working on Oh My Mother!, I thought about how I would tell the story about my own name — that I was technically named after Connie Chung, because she — along with the other personalities on TV — taught my whole family English. I was stunned when she responded to my cold email. We’ve stayed in touch through the years, and I finally was able to tell this story for the @nytopinion, which ended up being a story far bigger than me.
Connie Chung is so so so funny, doesn’t suffer fools, is endlessly humble and clever, and literally has the nicest skin in the world wtf. I’m so glad to be able to finally provide her with proof of her impact (I had actually met Connie once before at an @apexforyouth gala — see last pic of her responding to what was surely a very inelegant and baffling version of this story).
There is so much that didn’t make it into the final piece for good reason (thank you to my brilliant editor, @AliciaPQW), but I did want to resurrect one thing that got left on the cutting room floor: to all the Connies out there, THE Connie Chung wants you to know: “Maury says hi.”

A little over two years ago, my mom Qing Li told me that the immigrant stories I had been giving her to read were making her too sad—“all they want to hear about us is that we suffer.” At the time, it struck me as strange—her life had been full of pain, misfortune, illness, and disaster. But I was seeing it wrong, she insisted. Her story was an adventure.
Oh My Mother! is what happened when I revisited our lives spent exploring exotic places—new hometowns, unexpected careers, parenthood, the stage at Magic Mike, Europe (just generally)—with her optimism and stubborn spirit.
Thank you to everyone who’s bought it, read it, considered it, asked your library to carry it (and if you have, I’d be so grateful if you could review it on Goodreads and Amazon). Qing and I feel so warmed by all the shine you’ve been giving us—thank you thank you thank you

Ba Bao Zhou (eight treasure porridge) was, for writer @conconwang, a postpartum necessity, laden with both cultural significance and very literal nutrition that healed her in more ways than one. In “Blood In, Blood Out” she chronicles her post-pregnancy (x2) life, one where hunger (for meat, for independence, for normality, for comfort) rages until its quelled by food, family and the charming humdrum of a new phase of life. Read the full piece in Issue 8!

A few bowls of noodles in the morning + new sack dresses + stamps in the passport and I’M BACK, BABY.
(Thank you @litfest_hk for inviting me + Qing across the world, and for fostering the quick friendships and camaraderie among us authors. The stack of books on my nightstand is once again overwhelming me, and there’s no better feeling!!)
