It is time to Shellebrate for World Turtle Day! For more than forty years, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) have been a phenomenon in pop culture, spawning an empire which includes toys, animation, films, video games, and every type of merchandise under the sun. In 2009, Nickelodeon acquired the rights to the TMNT franchise from Mirage Studios and licensed it to comics publisher IDW who launched a new series which brought together disparate elements from the original comics, animated series, and films, as well as creating new plotlines and characters.
In this featured image by Mateus Santolouco from that initial IDW run, Raphael dives recklessly into a horde of Foot Clan ninja as Master Splinter and Leonardo reluctantly follow him in the fray. Despite turtles having little expression in real life, the rage is evident in this depiction as Raphael charges into battle. Santolouco has a distinctive style that works well with this world and has become one of the preeminent modern-TMNT artists.

Although he is nearly 100 years old, boy reporter Tintin and his faithful dog continue to remain eternally youthful. Created in 1929 by Belgian cartoonist Herge [pen name of Georges Remi], Tintin is a national hero and a sensation across Europe and in many French classrooms in the United States. This featured page finds Tintin and Captain Haddock on an Arctic exploration ship where they are alarmed to discover a stash of dynamite has gone missing.
At the time this strip was published, the second World War was ravaging the continent. Herge had been appointed editor of Le Soir Jeunesse, a children's edition of Brussels' leading newspaper, after his former publisher had been shut down by the German occupation. To avoid political censorship, Tintin's adventures became more oriented towards scientific exploration during this period and cast characters from Allied nations as villains. Critics have pointed to this story as an example of collaboration with the Axis occupiers.

Happy Cool Sword Day, everyone! For anyone who grew up in the 80s, there were plenty of cool swords to choose from in popular culture but without a doubt one of the absolute coolest was the Power Sword of Eternia. When Prince Adam lifted it over his head and declared "By the Power of Grayskull, I have the power!" he was transformed into He-Man, the Most Powerful Man in the Universe!
Seen here in the featured image, He-Man stands on the jawbridge of Castle Grayskull, defending it against villains such as Mosquitor, Sssqueeze, and the evil forces of Skeletor. This cover was penciled by Tom Morgan with inks by the inimitable Tom Palmer but never actually published as the series was cancelled with the thirteenth issue. Next month, Masters of the Universe will return to the big screen with another live action feature film, hopefully to better reviews than the 80s movie starring Dolph Lundgren.

The spirit of the samurai ethos meets the hustle and bustle of 80s Japan in a new spinoff from Stan Sakai's epic comic series Usagi Yojimbo. Writer Zack Rosenberg and artist Jared Cullum are both lifelong fans of the original series and present a new storyline about a descendant of the original ronin rabbit.
"We took a lot of clues and structure from Mr. Sakai's masterful story structure and took the character and had him born and raised in a very low-income part of the city," Cullum said in interview. "So, he dealt with a lot of gang interference, corruption and crime. This, coupled with his code of ethics, shaped him into a figure that wants to genuinely help people but is restrained by lack of power and money."
Both Cullum and Rosenberg will appear at Forbidden Planet in New York City today from 5-7pm to sign the latest issue. If you are attending, be sure to bring your sketchbook!
