A federal judge has allowed a lawsuit challenging prison labor conditions at Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola) to move forward as a class action — a decision that could impact thousands of incarcerated people.
The case focuses on Angola’s “farm line,” an agricultural work assignment that places incarcerated individuals in outdoor field labor on land that once operated as a plantation. Plaintiffs allege the conditions may violate the Eighth Amendment’s protections against cruel and unusual punishment and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The ruling comes amid broader scrutiny of Angola, where Corey Miller (C-Murder) is currently incarcerated. Miller is housed under the same labor and disciplinary framework challenged in the lawsuit and previously led a hunger strike protesting prison conditions, including medical care and work assignments.
While the lawsuit and Miller’s conviction are legally separate, both raise constitutional questions about conditions of confinement, labor, and accountability inside the prison system.
