In my work, I’m often selling people the “dream of what could be.” And that’s been so rewarding and exciting. I get to be in the room with so many people who wear the title of activist, humanitarian, lover, entrepreneur, and more. I’ve been molded into something better and more intentional by all these people.

But sometimes, those of us who have the honor of selling the dream of “what could be” often fail to show the side of “when it’s not…” The reason it is not, could be because things are broken, and messy and complicated to begin with. People are flawed and systems are broken and we all are trying to figure out how to live for the first time. Community work is simultaneously lovely, full of purpose, and important while also being frustrating, difficult, and never ending.

This year, there has been a lot of “when it’s not...” people leaving, ideas not working, and seasons coming to an end. I can’t help but feel the depth of Taylor Swift’s lyrics “but I can do it with a broken heart.” Many of your favorite social justice warriors, local and beyond, are doing it with a broken heart. Hearts broken by the work, personal circumstances, and the grind of just trying to survive. But still we persist.

Today something ended
Today someone left
Tomorrow is September
Tomorrow we begin again

And to be clear my heart is not always broken in this work. There is so much joy and hope I feel in this work. I just also want to acknowledge the heavy too.So my caption is the heavy while these photos are the joy.

The revolution will not be televised, but it must be organized…and it must be organized with the intention of interdependence. So grateful to start this journey with my new cohort and friends through @ncbaclusa

Here’s to the next 7 months of radicalization, education, accountability, creativity, laughs and continually holding space for one another.

For a special moment in time I got to live with two of my closest friends in a quirky little house on Queen St. I know it was truly blessing to share space with both of these amazingly kind-hearted fun-loving beautiful women. Thank you for always being there for me. Thank you for teaching me about unconditional love and true friendship. And thank you for all the memories. Here’s to our next season of life 🥂

I’m so grateful for the invisible string, connecting me to a woman with such warmth in her heart and individuality in her being. Every time I’ve been around you, especially since we’ve become adults, I feel a sense of childlike peace. It’s because my big sister is near and she’s stable; exuding love and the type of life I’d be lucky to live.

Now that you’re becoming a mother I’m more excited to watch you and John be the best version of all of our parents. I have full confidence that baby Ariyah will grow up in a loving, gentle, and fun household.

I know we don’t talk a lot, but please know that gathering for your big life moments over the years has meant a lot to me. I really admire you big sister. Since I was 4 years old, there was an invisible string connecting me to you. 619 miles apart in neighborhood and experience but my heart feels full to know I’m related to someone so amazing. I love you. You’re going to be a great mom.

I have a lot of feelings about this past week. And I’m not going to use this post to say it all. But below are a few thoughts and thanks.

• Thank you to my @vigilanthope family for loving me and guiding me. You all have nurtured my growth since 2019 and have had a major impact on my life. @lifewithlaurab thank you specifically for being the mentor and friend I always needed.

• Thank you @iamccda for an amazing conference where I could reconcile with my lack of wellbeing yet leave feeling renewed and inspired.

• Belonging and kinship matters. “If we don’t have peace in this world, it’s because we’ve forgotten that we belong to one another” - Mother Theresa (I’m not endorsing her just this thought provoking statement)

• And lastly, Wilmington NC has an opportunity to creatively and intentionally find better ways to love, advocate for and support ALL of our neighbors. It’s our responsibility. The leaders from ilm that attended this conference are amazing lights with bright ideas and gentle spirits. Get ready for radical change 😘
