what a true thrill to share Derby/Oaks weekend with my man @kirkherbstreit and his family and posse! He's got this thing wired and is an exceedingly generous host. This year marks 30 years since we started working together on CFB weekends. Sort of mind blowing. It's my first time at the derby since abc/ESPN lost the rights 26 years ago! This is the man I've been trying to know better in recent weeks. My father, Knox Fowler. I was 16 when lung cancer took him from us. i'm now 13 years older than he was. hard to wrap my head around that. i've long ago put away the grief. Or so I thought. But there are So many questions unasked. So many life chapters missed. What he left behind were cassette tapes.. ten hours of his theatricalvoice narrating his daily struggles, fears, and also powerful lessons learned in his final years. I traveled to four places, retracing some of his favorite steps, hearing first hand stories about the impact he made. As I said in the previous reel, it was both warm andinspiring, AND dark and heavy. The 3 pictures I chose (set tothe pianobrilliance of favorite musician, Horowitz)show different facets: the intense theater director and professor.. and a playful side. More sides of him will be explored in the upcoming short documentary feature on ESPN. It will air on Father's day. Thank you sincerely for the thoughtful and supportive comments on prior posts. it was midway through the 5 day road tripto learn more about the dad I lost far too early... there had been some very happy moments listening to stories from his former college students in Rockford, IL... and THEN there was the hour spent at our family house of almost 50 years ago in Colorado Springs... not happy.. very heavy. but It's all part of the quest.. this will all be shown in a special feature on ESPN for Father's day. much more to come. #father #dad #life
