The work originates from a rock-climbing experience shared with a friend, an avid climber. What draws her to the sport is not simply the moment of reaching the summit, but a certain sense of certainty it provides. The holds of a route are visible and fixed; even after failure, one can return to the ground, reassess, and try again. It is, in this sense, a fair system—its variables exposed, its efforts capable of accumulating into transformation.
This certainty stands in stark contrast to life. There are no such visible “holds”; its “routes” are in constant flux, shifting and reconfiguring beyond perception, redirecting even the most deliberate efforts toward unpredictable outcomes.
In the work, I detach the climbing holds from the rock face and affix them onto two strips of soft fabric swaying in the air. The wall disappears, replaced by a fragile, yielding surface unable to support weight. The holds remain, yet they no longer function as points of ascent. Instead, they pierce, constrain, and drag downward. Suspended and unstable, they hover in mid-air—unable to settle, impossible to climb.
