Chamberlain Architects
A Melbourne based studio specialising in residential architecture and interiors and architectural commercial projects throughout Australia.

Located in Central Victoria, this house has been designed for an active family that love to tinker and spend time exploring and maintaining their large country property. The house itself is designed as a companion to this way of living, offering a protected retreat from the elements. It’s a space that visually connects to the spectacular views, whilst offering respite from the sun, wind and rain.
With visual outlook being a top priority, the intent for the interior is to act as a quiet backdrop, whilst offering a space of cosy comfort. The palette is calm and muted in colour but textured and tactile, inviting a sense of humanness; exposed rammed earth, warm timber, softly figured limestones, textured micro cement with accents of aged brass. It’s a home that will celebrate the patina of age.

An enduring challenge with heritage terrace homes is navigating daylight access with a building envelope heavily constrained by context and scale.
At this renovation to a Victorian terrace in North Fitzroy, a new upper level is tucked discretely behind the heritage facade. At the rear of the house, a steeply sloped ceiling rises up to capture a mezzanine floor.Landscaping and pivoting screens hover above the sunken rear living, creating layered spatial drama.
Carefully curated skylights together with a series of north facing courtyards introduce ample natural light and a meaningful connection to landscape on an otherwise tight site.

Kanyini House in Mount Eliza explores the tension between grounded, monolithic forms and fine, lightweight elements. Split into two wings that follow the site, a rammed earth mass anchors the street while a lighter pavilion floats toward the creek at the rear.
Internally, these two ideas are juxtaposed throughout. Joinery is designed as monolithic blocks, paired with fine, delicate details.

The kitchen has a rear benchtop that spans over ten metres with a four metre island bench in front. With no overheads, these two volumes anchor the kitchen to the ground. Only a fine steel shelf sails across the length of the bench, capturing the top of the stone splashback. Although monolithic in form, the island is assembled using planes of steel sheet with razor sharp edges, a spindly Ross Gardam pendant floats overhead.
These moments articulate a careful balance between weight and lightness, where monolithic forms are softened by finely resolved details to create interiors that feel both grounded and quietly refined.
Look out for the beautifully crafted steel handles by Gonzlab…

One of our favourite townhouses is currently for sale in Northcote.
We make a point of extending the same care and craftsmanship from our single residential projects to our townhouse and boutique multi-residential work, without compromise on quality, proportion or detail.
Merri Green, overlooking the Northcote Golf Course, was conceived as a resident-first development – generous in scale and enduring in quality, designed to be true forever homes. That philosophy underpins this townhouse.
Designed for longevity, the home features soaring 3-metre ground floor ceilings and full-height glazing that amplify light, scale and connection to the outdoors. A grounded material palette of locally sourced recycled brick and porcelain benchtops creates warmth and texture, while a screen of spotted gum wraps the façade, filtering beautiful light into the living spaces. Crafted details such as an Anchor ceramics pendant, recycled Blackbutt elements incorporated into internal joinery and a custom vinyl storage unit add the attention to detail and care you would expect in any of our single residential homes.
