Charles G. Esperanza is the second of six cool kids. The South Bronx is where he first opened his eyelids. A dope land shrouded in bright-colored decay, the home of graffiti and hip-hop DJs! He paints funky elephants! Bodegas too! Mixed with this wonder is some whimsical truth. Charles has a voice that is seldom heard. A fusion of jazz, distorted guitars, and chirping birds.

I’m excited to be part of Love Luggage: Illustrators Unite for Foster Kids with @unclaimedbag and the Society of Illustrators this Saturday, May 2 from 11am-3pm.
Stop by for this special community event in recognition of National Foster Care Month, where we’re transforming luggage into something meaningful. I’ll be creating a one-of-a-kind suitcase live alongside a group of incredible illustrators.

You can even pick up a brush - guests of all ages are invited to help paint suitcases that will be donated directly to foster youth.

The stars of Fish Fry Friday and Soul Food Sunday came together today at the Society of Illustrators to celebrate our painting being selected to display in the amazing Original Art Show! This show highlightssome of the best artwork from picturebooks released in 2025!

My nephew Nolan, who will one day be a scientist/engineer/astronaut first starred in Soul Food Sunday with My mother the soulful Bronx Boricua Lydia Esperanza when he was 3! A few years later, they both revisited their roles as grandma and Grandson in this amazing series written by Winsome Bingham (@armyvetfive) But this time, instead of preparing greens and macaroni, they frying Catfish and Hushpuppies!

(I promise my mom was taller than Nolan when I took my reference photos almost 2 years ago😂)

Thank you to the amazing staff, judges and curators at @soi128 for selecting this book that was truly made with love!

Wishing a very Happy Birthday to Jean-Michel Basquiat on what would've been his 65th Birthday. I recreated his NY Times magazine cover from 1985 as a tribute.As a fellow Puerto Rican, West indian artist from NYC, I've been inspired by Jean's confidence, originality and willingness to challenge the status quo for many years.
