PROGRAM DROP!
This winter, the Castlemaine Documentary Festival looks for the light. The 2026 program is built around a simple theme: Love – The Antidote. In a time that feels fractured, it’s an invitation to hold onto what connects us.

Across the weekend of June 26-28, you’ll find documentaries that stay with you, conversations and curiosities sparked, a porridge breakfast with Duang, a film that turns into a party with DJ Jen Moore, hot soup cooking throughout the weekend by Castlemaine Community Lunch,CDoc special cocktails from Table Records and more!

You’ll watch films from across the globe, sitting alongside our Local stories made by local filmmakers from right here in Central Victoria. (stay tuned our full LOCALS program announced soon!)

Eleven sessions. Three days. One very cosy winter weekend in Castlemaine.

A Full Weekend Pass gets you access to all of it. Or choose a day - Friday, Saturday or Sunday passes are available, as well as single session tickets if there’s one thing you know you can’t miss.

The program is waiting for you to explore on our website now.

For those of you who have just tuned into CDoc, we would like to take a moment to introduce you...
Since 2015, the Castlemaine Documentary Festival has been dedicated to bringing world-class documentary films, the extraordinary film-makers behind them, and immersive film events to the heart of Castlemaine.

We run a handful of events throughout the year, and each winter we gather people around for a full weekend of honest, thought-provoking, beautifully crafted films that open our minds and hearts. Documentaries do more than entertain us; they deepen our understanding of each other and the world we share. Year after year, we see audiences connect, reflect, and carry those conversations far beyond the cinema doors. We need this more than ever.

In June 2026, we proudly return to our festival home, Castlemaine's iconic @theatreroyalcastlemaine, the oldest continually operating theatre in Australia and a cornerstone of our cultural life here.

Nestled in the heart of Djaara Country, Castlemaine is well worth the trip: a town full of life, creativity, and some of the best food and wine the region has to offer.

Our twelfth edition promises a vibrant program of feature documentaries, conversation panels, music, an industry lunch, and a closing-night party to remember, all wrapped around this year's theme, "Love - The Antidote."

Out of the underground clubs on the South Side of Chicago, a group of friends turned a new sound into a global movement.

Move Ya Body: The Birth of House traces the emergence of house music in late ‘70s Chicago, born in the aftermath of disco’s violent backlash, and rooted in Black and queer communities who needed somewhere to belong.

Blending archival footage with first-hand accounts, the documentary tells the story of basement parties and DIY visionaries who transformed dance floors into spaces of resistance, joy, and radical togetherness.

Consider the film an excellent warm-up that will move you off your seat and onto the dancefloor, where Castlemaine’s favourite DJ, @djenmoore Jen Moore, will take us where we need to go.We promise, you won’t be standing still.

Move Ya Body: The Birth of House
ELEGANCE BRATTON | USA | 2025 | 1'32"

This event is brought to you by our friends at @94.9mainfm and @table.records; word is they will also have a CDoc special cocktail on offer all weekend.

We have one more important event coming up before the festival, presented in collaboration with the Theatre Royal.

On May 28, join us for a special Central Victorian Indigenous Film Festival (CVIFF) screening of My Survival As An Aboriginal (1978), 50 min, directed by advocate and activist Essie Coffey OAM, the first Australian documentary made by an Aboriginal woman. A landmark work that turned the camera on life in Brewarrina and bore witness to the injustices faced by her community. (recently restored by @nfsaonline )

This screens alongside the short film, Moort Calling Dingo Back to Country (2026), 10 min, exploring the deep kinship between Cultural Custodians and the Dingo, and the united effort to protect them from widespread killing programs.
@defendthewild @dingoculture

🎫 Tickets available through the @theatreroyalcastlemaine Website.

This screening is a powerful way to land in Reconciliation Week on Dja Dja Wurrung Country and reflect on what it means to be 'All In' for Reconciliation. @reconciliationaus @reconciliationvic

Since 2023, in collaboration with the Castlemaine Documentary Festival, ZÖJ has performed alongside the legendary silent documentary GRASS for audiences of more than 1,500 people.

This extraordinary documentary was made 101 years ago in Iran/Persia and follows the 48-day migration of the Bakhtiari tribe across Zardkuh Mountain and the Karun River.

It has been a great honour to create and perform a live score for such a remarkable film, and we can’t wait to share it again in our upcoming performances.

Last Friday, ZÖJ performed live alongside Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life, a 1925 film following the Bakhtiari people's extraordinary 48-day migration across what is now Iran, captured through a foreign lens. What ZÖJ brings to this film is something entirely new. Their sound honours the weight of that journey and offers a richer dialogue.

It was beautiful and moving and unsurprising that it ended with a standing ovation.

@zojduet , you are a wonder. We wish you all the best on your upcoming tour, which also brings this experience to Italy.
