Behind every festival, filming project and outdoor event in Brighton, there’s a huge amount of work happening behind the scenes to bring the city to life 🌇

At this month’s Chamber Breakfast, Ian Baird, Outdoor Events Manager at Brighton & Hove City Council, shared what goes on behind the scenes of the 170 events and 400 filming projects Brighton hosts each year - and the balancing act of making it all work in a busy city.

Supporting grassroots organisers, thinking about the future of Brighton after dark, better support for night workers; the conversation explored what events really bring to a city beyond entertainment. Ian got our members talking about how to make Brighton safe when the city is asleep, as well as making sure Brighton is active all year round!

Led by Mo Kanjilal, we explored the hidden history and heritage of India in Brighton, spotting minarets and arches. Mo shared some of the ways India has influenced Brighton and England - from words such as dungarees, bungalow, bandana and shampoo, to the first Indian author to publish in English - Sake Deen Mahomed (otherwise known as the Shampoo Surgeon to the Kings) 🫧

For 13 years, Brighton Summit has been about bringing people together and having conversations that shape business and the city.

This year, we’re running a ticket ballot – a new initiative designed to make the Summit more accessible, inclusive and representative of our business community.

We have 20 fully-funded tickets for people who might not otherwise be able to join us. That could include those facing financial barriers, people from underrepresented backgrounds, early career creatives, start-up founders – or anyone whose circumstances might make attending difficult.

We don’t expect everyone’s situation to fit into a specific category. If cost or circumstances would prevent you from joining us, we encourage you to enter.

At this month’s Chamber Breakfast, we heard from Bobby Brown, Creative Community Producer at Lighthouse, interviewed by Kaia Allen-Bevan, about opening up pathways for young people into the creative industries - and what happens when we don’t.

Talent is everywhere, opportunity isn’t.
