Wet, rumbly sci fi bass for futuristic weapons, spaceships, lava and other big gooey deep sounds. All created from a simple percussive sound and Ableton stock plugins. After years of using every plugin imaginable, I’ve been digging into the stock plugins so much lately and it’s so helpful for sound design and quick results to throw into the game.

Along with my mastering business, I have been recently working a lot on sound design and music for the game, Warped Universe. We’re a small team following a dream of making a game from scratch, bootstrapped and no publisher. The game is going into Early Access soon and I’m going to be posting more about the sound design process of it to help with the push (as well as other studio stuff like my day to day mastering).

Making alien chittering sounds for game sound design. I recorded myself peeling and eating an orange up close to the mic, eating some curry, playing with a plastic straw wrapper from a juice box and drinking the juice. Then I cut it all up into different tracks, pitch shifted, filtered, eq, distorted, messed with Ableton’s warp settings and automated grain size and flux and warp modes, and now I’m exporting each little piece to assemble into sound cues in Unreal Engine to make an alien language. This is just a few seconds of it but I have endless variations of randomness for full immersion 🤘👽

Really enjoying @minimal.audio Rift and Morph EQ for this type of work. They’re sound design beasts. Wishlist Warped Universe on Steam if you play games. All sound design and music by me and the game is getting real fun.

Late night sound design in Unreal Engine 5 with the help of Ableton Live. Tonight I added a lot of ghostly echoing ambience, wind, and little critter sounds throughout this map in Warped Universe to set the mood. I’ve really been enjoying game sound design this last year, whether it’s environment, character sounds, or music. It’s a completely different way of thinking with 3D placement and distances when compared to linear sequencing in music production. #gamedev #unrealengine #sounddesign
