I wrote the earliest poems in this book when I was nineteen years old, an ocean and continent from where I was born and raised, freezing my ass off and completely distraught nearly all the time. I wrote this book for over a decade. In those years, I watched my family displaced in slow-motion from the only place I’d called home. For as long as I can remember, people from Hawai’i have called Las Vegas “The Ninth Island,” at first the product of relentless advertising from airlines and casinos, now a strange truth as so many have left the islands for myriad reason and made lives in the desert.
I love poetry—maybe that’s obvious. It has given me a way to be in the world. It has given me a home. So many of my closest friends I’ve met through this weird thing we do with words.I have worked, am working, to make sure this book does right by Hawai’i, its people, everyone I love, even that kid who covered his Vans in Shoe Goo to wear them through the snow, who spent his days thinking about line breaks instead of graduating on time (sorry Mom).
It is a dream to have a book with @upittpress, joining heroes of mine like Ross Gay and Sharon Olds, my teachers Quan Barry and @illuminatemics. I’m going to be completely honest with you: this book is kind of odd. These are poems of grief filled with jokes, visited by my ancestors and also Kevin Durant. It’s an island in the desert. I hope you’ll join me in freaking the hell out. THE NINTH ISLAND IS COMING IN SPRING 2027!!!

glad to have two shorter poems from The Ninth Island in the new issue of @likeafieldmag especially alongside a poem about aphids by @johnpaaaul this one time we played a pickup game with Ross Gay and spent all our time playing needlessly intense defense on each other (neither of us has a handle or can shoot) and everyone was like what are you guys doing
these two poems started the way so many of them do: written quickly on my phone and immediately texted to @miralayuyi and @jonnyteklit , my forever first readers. long live the sweater swap. I love my friends so much. what a gift to get to come to the page every day and try out new ways to move and delight them 🏀💙🧡

Met with @dr.dphelps in November after a long week of teaching. I thought it’d be a quick interview, but months later our conversation is still going. Idk if anything my Friday-addled high school teacher brain had to say made much sense, but I’m so glad for Darius’ friendship. He always has way more to say about my poems than I do haha. You can read his great questions and my serviceable answers in the new issue of @tupelo_quarterly, along with three poems from The Ninth Island. Btw I’m about to be in Baltimore, mostly at the aquarium tho 🤙🐡

Poem up on @frozenseapoetry about playing paintball as a kid at Kualoa Ranch, which, in addition to many other things, is where Jurassic Park was filmed. Third slide is me at around 12 years old, highly visible in white Air Monarchs and the namesake khakis. Goes without saying I was very bad at paintball and was really just there to hang out 🦕

@jej_sen has a great interview in here and only says the word “river” once. Rare!
Highly recommend reading the whole issue, it’s literally free
Also @miralayuyi took this author photo and they weren’t even trying to. Maybe you should hire them to take yours
