The sudden resignation of former Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara has sparked renewed criticism from community organizations that say city leaders ignored longstanding concerns about his leadership.
And after Mayor Jacob Frey revealed O’Hara interfered with an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations, advocacy groups are questioning why Frey nominated him for another term just weeks earlier.

Brian O’Hara resigned Tuesday as Minneapolis Police Chief after an investigative report found he interfered with a prior investigation that included unsubstantiated allegations he had “engaged in sexual intimate relationships” with city employees.
According to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, the investigation showed that O’Hara “knowingly and intentionally” deleted a contact card for a city employee from his city-issued cell phone during the original investigation, “in an attempt to shield that evidence” of his connection to the employee from investigators.
Jacob Frey had nominated O’Hara for a second term about three weeks ago.

Kevin Hart went on the Breakfast Club this morning and responded to the backlash following his roast on Netflix where comedian Tony Hinchcliffe mocked George Floyd’s death and final moments saying to Hart, “The Black community is so proud of you. Right now George Floyd is looking up at us all laughing so hard he can’t breathe.”
Local civil rights activists and community leaders had demanded a public response from Hart condemning the remarks aired under his platform.
In short, Hart basically said, “Leave me out of it,” and that he supported the family, “when it happened.”

In a 7-6 vote, the Minneapolis City Council rejected the $6 million purchase of land for a $40 million Community Safety Training and Wellness Center project in the Windom neighborhood of Minneapolis—a proposal by Mayor Jacob Frey.
Supporters said the facility would modernize emergency response training and meet state reform mandates.
Opponents criticized the multimillion-dollar project as an expensive expansion of police infrastructure at a time of housing shortages, budget strain and ongoing distrust of law enforcement.

In one of the final acts of the 2026 legislative session, Minnesota lawmakers passed a bipartisan funding package to stabilize Hennepin Healthcare and prevent potential closures at HCMC, the state’s premier safety-net hospital.
The deal provides $205 million in immediate funding and access to an additional $500 million in reserve support through 2031, while also restructuring hospital oversight and launching a task force to develop long-term funding solutions for the Minneapolis-based healthcare system that serves patients across Minnesota and neighboring states.

The Minneapolis City Council will vote Thursday on a proposed $6 million purchase of land for a $40 million Community Safety Training and Wellness Center project in the Windom neighborhood of Minneapolis.
The motion was discussed during Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. After an hour of debate, the council advanced the motion for a vote by the full City Council. If it doesn’t pass, the existing Letter of Intent the city entered to buy the land will be null and void.
Right now, it does not have enough support to pass.
Minneapolis leaders on Monday announced the launch of the FAST task force, a new multi-agency unit focused on investigating non-fatal shootings with the same urgency as homicides.
City council members said the initiative came after more than a year spent studying a successful St. Paul model and working to bring a similar data-driven approach to reducing gun violence to Minneapolis.
Leaders describe the effort as a data-driven strategy to increase accountability, prevent retaliatory violence, and improve public safety. But there is concern about the sustainability of the initiative.

A federal judge has ordered prosecutors to provide unredacted evidence to defense attorneys in the ongoing case involving 38 people charged after a January protest at Cities Church in St. Paul.
Going against the judge’s Protective Order, the government blacked out the names and identifying information of witnesses and law enforcement officers in thousands of pages of evidence turned over to the defense.
“I don’t understand how this has happened,” Judge Micko said. “As you can sense, I’m frustrated by it. I’m trying to keep your case on track.”
Attorneys said the redactions made it impossible to investigate claims made against the defendants or verify who was present during the Jan. 18 demonstration.
“We agreed to a strict Protective Order to ensure the privacy of individuals while still allowing us to do our jobs,” said attorney Bruce Nestor. “By covering up every name and contact detail, the Government is effectively hiding the evidence. We believe this was their intent from the beginning.”
The government now has until May 22 to reproduce the discovery evidence without redactions.
