Getting losst. @chasebliss have blessed us with another sound shaping gem. Lossy recreates digital signal loss in a unique 90s vibes sort of a way. Think old modems, bad cell phone connections, internet video sound in 1994. I don’t know of another pedal that does this.

I’ve been helping with testing on one of the first units. This thing is going to be super expressive, touch oriented, with a unique tone. Lots of modulation. A multi-layer looper included. Stereo reverb.

The hunt for broken textures is a forever project. These sounds are going to be very interesting in Outgrowth or Digitakt. Rather than editing down to specific moments, I like to drop large WAVs in (30-60 seconds) and then just explore. Pitch variation, randomized start points, granular processing.

Arpeggios and subtle Ultrasheer. I’ve enjoyed the Replay’s combination of sound design depth and relative simplicity, and it inspired me to make a full set of presets. They range from pristine clarity to noisy arpeggiated chaos monsters – and have been great in DAW projects and on tape.

〰️〰️〰️Manual tape speed fluctuations 〰️〰️〰️

Related but not related – a bit of marketing 🫣 I’ve just opened registration for a new group class. It’s all about recreating the sound of hardware degradation in Ableton Live. When I started exploring Live 12, I was genuinely surprised: some of its newer devices can emulate analog degradation very well. The functions aren’t obvious, they require some digging, some rearranging. But once you know where to look, it is magic.

I’ve since built out a set of devices inspired by my favorite tape machines and effects units. And naturally, that gave me ideas for a class. This will be a 3 session Zoom class all about Live’s incredible new tone shaping tools.

The class will take place on three consecutive Mondays at 8pm Eastern (New York) Time, 90 minutes each: April 20, April 27, May 4, 2026.

We’ll break down the building blocks of degraded tone — digital artifacting, pitch modulation, emulated tape noise, breakup, voltage-starved saturation, parallel compression, and filtering — and show you how to build these textures yourself inside Live 12.
