Blackout 2.6 is here on Blackout Next and it’s a MASSIVE update 🖤 read the release notes.

This release introduces Import / Export between location files, the ability to export entire projects, and improvements across Live Plot, macros, favorites, and Stream Deck Plus integration.

New in Blackout 2.6:
- Import specific elements from one location file into another using the new Import / Export workflow

DMX is the standard lighting protocol that lets you talk to your lights. Each DMX universe has 512 channels, with values from 0–255 controlling everything from dimmer to color, temperature, tint, RGB, crossfade, and more. Different fixture modes can condense channels or even allow 16-bit control, letting you fine-tune movements or color with 65,536 steps instead of just 256.

When you need to control multiple universes or run long cable distances, Art-Net and sACN come into play. These are DMX-over-Ethernet protocols that can transmit hundreds, or even thousands of universes over a single cable, reducing the mess of XLR runs on large setups.

For wireless setups, CRMX, WDMX, Show DMX, and other systems replace physical cables, letting you transmit DMX to multiple receivers. Many modern lights, like ARRI Skypanels, Astera Titan Tubes, Creamsource Vortex8s, and LiteGear Litemats, already have receivers built in, so wireless DMX is plug-and-play.

Understanding these protocols allows you to run large, complex lighting setups efficiently and professionally, whether wired or wireless, single universe or multi-universe.

Blackout’s Cloud Database contains over 45,000 verified profiles covering thousands of manufacturers and models. Every profile marked with a green “Verified” badge has been physically tested by Blackout’s Fixture Database Team to ensure it works correctly.

Can’t find your fixture? Request a profile through the Blackout Help Center and our team will add it to the database. When requesting a profile, include the manufacturer name, fixture model, and a link to the DMX sheet from the manual. This helps us create an accurate profile faster.

Turnaround is typically under 12 hours, often 20 to 30 minutes during European business hours. Our dedicated profile team builds it accurately, then it goes into the database for everyone to use. It comes back verified, standardized, and ready to patch.

We do offer a custom profile builder for very simple profiles, but it’s always best to send us the sheet so we can add it fast and accurately for everyone. We love making profiles.

Patching multiple Astera fixtures doesn’t have to take forever.

This workflow gets a dozen tubes ready in under one minute instead of the usual 10+ minutes of manual addressing.

Use the Astera ARC3 “white” remote to switch all fixtures to blue mode at once instead of pressing and holding the button on each tube. With your ART7 transmitter paired to your WiFi router, open Blackout, connect to Astera, and hit the pair to light button. All fixtures stop flashing blue and pair simultaneously.

Once paired, send patch data down the line systematically (or all at once using “assign to patch” with multiple fixtures selected). Go to your patch, select the Astera logo, choose your fixture type, and send patch data to each fixture sequentially. Use a DMX tester to confirm all fixtures are addressed correctly and running in the proper order.

What’s the difference between fade time and delay time in lighting control?

Both affect how your fixtures transition, but they control completely different things. Understanding when to use each one gives you precise control over fixture movement and lets you create staggered effects without recording dozens of cues.

**Fade time (T) controls how long a transition takes.** If you set a fade time of 3 seconds, your fixture takes 3 seconds to move from its current state to the new one. A fade time of 0 means the fixture snaps instantly. Fade time determines the speed of the change.

**Delay time (D) controls when a transition starts.** If you set a delay time of 2 seconds, your fixture waits 2 seconds before beginning its fade. Delay time offsets the start of the transition without affecting how long it takes. You can also use delay time on its own to snap a fixture with 0 fade time.

**Individual versus global timing:** You can set fade and delay times globally for all fixtures, or individually per fixture. Global timing means every fixture fades and delays at the same rate. Individual timing lets you assign different fade and delay values to each fixture, creating staggered effects where some fixtures move quickly while others take longer.

**Creating staggered effects:** Combine individual fade times and delay times to create cascading patterns, wave effects, or sequential transitions. Some fixtures can snap instantly while others fade slowly. Some can start immediately while others wait. This gives you complex timing without building separate sequences for every variation.

You can also use these tools to match fixtures which are limited by their physical hardware. For example a tungsten 2k cannot physically snap off so you could use individual fixture timing to give an LED fixture a fade time to match the tungsten 2k so they both appear to fade at the same time.

Once you understand how fade time and delay time work together, you can create sophisticated timing effects with just a few adjustments instead of recording multiple cues.
