When the UAE began to bear the brunt of Iran’s retaliation to US-Isr*eli aggression, billboards proclaiming “Everyone is Emirati” appeared around Dubai in an attempt to generate solidarity from residents of a country where Emirati citizens form only 11% of the population.

But the empty message has been exposed by a report in New Lines Magazine that the UAE has expelled up to 15,000 Pakistani workers without formal charges.

They were deported so abruptly that they were not even allowed to withdraw their own savings from Emirati banks.

With Iran being the most populous nation with the Shia sect of Islam as the majority religion, the bulk of Pakistanis deported appear to be Shia. Reports indicate that even Sunnis with “Shia-sounding” names or those seen visiting Shia mosques have been expelled.

This collective punishment may also be motivated by the UAE’s tensions with Pakistan, which is trying to broker peace between the US and Iran. The New York Times reports the UAE is “upset” that Pakistan has not forcefully condemned Iranian strikes. As a result, the country has even recalled a $3.5 billion loan to Pakistan—wiping out nearly a fifth of the country’s foreign reserves.
For the two million Pakistanis living in the UAE, their labour is the backbone of both the Emirati infrastructure and Pakistan’s economy, contributing over $8 billion in remittances last year. Now they have been expelled without their savings.

This story reflects that in practice, the UAE maintains a rigid, disposable hierarchy. The migrant labourers who built the nation are denied the most basic human rights and are discarded the moment they no longer serve a political or sectarian agenda.
