Our second monthly issue, "Biology's New Era," is live now on bigthink.com.

In this issue, we explore the bleeding edge of biotech, as well as the scientists, writers, and philosophers whose efforts helped get us here.

Some of what's inside:

⬤ Scientist-turned-writer Alex Hutchinson uses the legend of Secretariat to probe the limits of human athletic performance.

⬤ Futurist Peter Leyden examines how synthetic biology could help save Earth.

⬤ Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel challenges the leading theory of how life began.

All that and much, much more. We hope you enjoy.

🎨 Blake Cale @blake__cale

This monthly issue was made possible with support from @biohub, an organization that, like Big Think, believes technology can help us build a healthier future.

From Joshua Mezrich: “more than 100,000 patients are currently waiting for organ transplants in the United States, with kidney-seekers representing the majority. At the same time, about 600,000 patients in the U.S. are on dialysis; a similar number of patients are suffering from end-stage liver disease. About 1.5 million people need supplemental oxygen to breathe, and more than 6 million people suffer from heart failure. Needless to say, the current state of affairs is tragic.”

What do you think? Should we transplant pig organs to save lives?

What do we do about this beyond awareness?
