Get a load of these moments from our three commencement ceremonies this week!

That’s more than 2,000 bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degree recipients. We’re so proud of all of you. Congratulations, and Go Bears! 🐻💙💛 #BEGrad26 #CalGrad

Take it from our newly designated dean and “triple bear” alum Mark Asta:

“Engineers are doers by nature,” he said. “But remember, you are more than just engineers; you are Berkeley engineers. And with that brings a public mission to not only transform the world but to enhance it for the common good.”

The Summer ’26 issue of Berkeley Engineer magazine is here!

Our cover story centers on how Ken Goldberg, professor of @ucberkeleyieor and of @ucb_eecs, is redefining robot manipulation with creativity and code.

You can also learn about:

- researchers led by Michael Gollner, associate professor of @berkeleymechanicalengineering, working to understand how wildfire spreads through communities.

- how SOAR provides large-scale fabrication workspaces for student organizations at UC Berkeley.

- the conceptual underpinnings behind the Strauch Hypercube, the floating lightwork in our Grimes Engineering Center.

#DidYouKnow: We continue to offer the top public engineering grad program in the nation (as well as No. 3 overall), according to @usnews! 🏆

“It is notable that many of our departments are much smaller in size than their peers,” said Mark Asta, dean designate of UC Berkeley Engineering. “The results show how we continue to punch above our weight.”

Yesterday, @riceuniversity President @reginald_desroches (B.S.’90 ME, M.S.’92 CE, Ph.D.’97 CEE) made his way back to campus to give the keynote speech at our doctoral ceremony!

It’s a storied location as he met his wife, Paula Gilmer DesRoches, “just steps” from the Zellerbach in the nearby Pauley Ballroom. “Today, we have different accounts of who stared at who first.”

What we know for sure: the Rice president has some words of wisdom for our new Ph.D. grads! 🎓🎉 #BEGrad26 #CalGrad

One of our favorite moments during today’s doctoral commencement? Student speaker Megan Teng (Ph.D.’26 ME) acknowledging her grandmother’s impact on her work — and encouraging all of our Ph.D. grads to wave to their loved ones on our livestream.

Congratulations to all of our graduates! Go Bears 🐻💙💛 #BEGrad26 #CalGrad

We caught up with @NASA astronaut Warren “Woody” Hoburg (M.S.’11, Ph.D.’13 EECS) ahead of his keynote speech at our baccalaureate commencement!

He had some words of advice for our new grads — and our first aerospace engineering cohort in particular. 🚀

#DidYouKnow This year, Berkeley Engineering is sending off the first cohort of our new aerospace engineering program at tomorrow’s commencement ceremony! 🐻🎓

To celebrate this milestone, we asked members of the graduating class: "What was your biggest learning lesson in aerospace engineering at UC Berkeley?"

Hear it from our grads:

Madeleine Bardy: “My biggest learnings came from participating in clubs and organizations, where I learned to challenge complex engineering problems in interdisciplinary teams.

I was a part of the team that sent UC Berkeley’s first student-build liquid propellant rocket to space and built Berkeley’s first regeneratively cooled liquid-bipropellant rocket engine.

These are things that engineers in industry haven’t even had the chance to experience. And I’m really grateful to the aerospace program here.”

Jordan Kam: “It’s just how rich the research community and opportunities there are.

As an undergraduate student here at Berkeley, for the past three years, I’ve been doing research in the Berkeley AI Research Lab with aerospace-affiliated faculty.

Through these opportunities, I’ve been able to do hands-on research and publications and travel the world to present some of my research.”

Aaron Bush Wegulo: “One of the biggest learning lessons in aerospace engineering has been understanding the power of resilience and community.

Aerospace engineering is a demanding field. There are moments when the workload is demanding as well.

Understanding that during these moments, these difficult moments, that’s when growth happens. That’s when you choose to pick yourself, when you choose to push yourself.

Andrew Ji: “It’s the importance of first principles thinking. I think the coursework here was actually really great about preparing us to do those kinds of things.

I got to explore anything and everything from embedded systems to compressible flow to robotics.

I thought that gave me a lot of breadth to pull from whenever I tackle engineering problems.”
