super honored to have my writing included in this special issue of Liminalities on Corporeal Migration and Performance, edited by @perform.brazil and Anwar Uhuru. I began this research during my Murray Jackson fellowship from WSU, recently shared in performance in Detroit last March with @shann.white and @itsjust4u , in May during the Schule Lab at @im_flieger in Vienna with @eliza_beth_ward, and now in this essay, “Becoming Epiphyte: Tree Sitting, Hypermingling, (Para)sitism, and Abolition Ecologies” in LIminalities!! There is no cure for the condition of belonging to the world. But, by taking care, we can cure ourselves of believing that we do not belong to it, that the essential question lies elsewhere, that what happens to the world does not concern us. The time is past for hoping to ‘get through it.’ We are indeed, as they say, ‘in a tunnel,’ except that we won’t see light at the end. In these matters, hope is a bad counselor, since we are not in a crisis. We can no longer say ’this, too, will pass.’ We’re going to have to get used to it. It’s definitive.
The imperative confronting us, therefore, is to discover a course of treatment – but without the illusion that a cure will come quickly. In this sense, it would not be impossible to make progress, but it would be progress in reverse: this would mean rethinking the idea of progress, retrogressing, discovering a different way of experiencing the passage of time. Instead of speaking of hope, we would have to explore a rather subtle way of ‘dis-hoping’: this doesn’t mean ‘despairing’ but, rather, not trusting in hope alone as a way of engaging with passing time. The hope of no longer counting on hope?

Part One: early rehearsal footage of Orchid Preludes shot by @oksanamirzoyan in Studio B… while @arte_sonos plays out of tune WSU pianos!! lol. Nonetheless an incredible working experience and a dip into a longer form, evening length work I hope we can have supported through to creation one day! With dancers @itsjust4u @nowwatchmerumba and costume designer Andrew Jordan. What a dream fam. All set to William Duckworth’s Time Curve Preludes. Eventually we made a short film.
Suspended in the cloud forests of the Anthropocene, three orchids persevere in ancient practices of mutuality, supporting harmony between the human and more-than-human worlds. As the planet accelerates towards inhabitability, their dance rides this current, engaging texture, scent, color, sound, and movement to create a diversion, and curve time towards a sustainable future. Orchid Preludes is a testament to the resiliency of life, offering a vision of hope amid the unknown.

Came across these rehearsal, tech, and performance images from ‘together’ at Jack NY ten years ago. It was a transition between apartment and park dances (It Never Really Happened to Hustle in the Park) - domesticity to social dance, private to public, glass boxes to greening expanse. Loved this group of friends/artists, neighborhood plants, and silvery-shinyinteriors.

Choreography: Biba Bell
Performers: Biba Bell, Santi Braz, Jessie Gold, Jordan Holland, Joey Kipp, Paige Martin, Ta’Rajee Omar
Music Direction: Scott Zacharias
SM: Amy Southers
together is an accumulation of materials from an ongoing project looking at dance, domesticity, modernism, affect, and architecture. The first and last installments, It Never Really Happened, are initially set in a Mies Van der Rohe apartment in downtown Detroit. This piece will feature past, present, and future extensions of the project.
Both a combination of, and a departure from, the past few years of Bell’s research and performance engaging dance through an affective, archi-historic lens of modernism and domesticity, together marks a new movement of portrayal. Developed in residencies that span from Germany to Austin, Texas, together significantly draws upon ample time spent in a glass box and its accompanying green space - a Mies van der Rohe live/work apartment couched in Detroit’s Lafayette Park. From the solo silhouette to the celebratory ensemble, dematerializing walls and stepping out to the music, the search for home may be best conceived in this dance together.
Curated by Stacy Grossfield at JACK NY, Brooklyn, NY

Developed in residencies that span from Germany to Austin, Texas, together significantly draws upon ample time spent in a glass box and its accompanying green space - a Mies van der Rohe live/work apartment couched in Detroit’s Lafayette Park. From the solo silhouette to the celebratory ensemble, dematerializing walls and stepping out to the music, the search for home may be best conceived in this dance together.
Curated by Stacy Grossfield at JACK NY, Brooklyn, NY

Came across these rehearsal, tech, and performance images from ‘together’ at Jack NY ten years ago. It was a transition between apartment and park dances (It Never Really Happened to Hustle in the Park) - domesticity to social dance, private to public, glass boxes to greening expanse. Loved this group of friends/artists, neighborhood plants, and silvery-shinyinteriors.

together (2016)

Friends!! My new dance, Wayfinding is premiering this Friday.
Wayfinding, the first dance I’ve made at WSU with students in close to five years, is a BIG dance (so much relentless dancing) that has taken over my (sub)conscious life (in the best way). We’ve been working all semester asking questions through choreographic prompts and embodied research: what does it mean to be moved by the world, decentered across a seismic, tumultuous ground? How do we navigate the labyrinth in especially dark times; are we w/ or w/o a North Star? Who do we continuously pass as ships in the night? Can you see me, or I you? And, how do we blur and expand the perceived frameof the event (aka proscenium arch)?
Four atmospheric materials join us: a buoy bell, spinnaker sails, wind, and trampoline 🌪️🌊🩵
COME! Wayfinding in the spring dance concert at WSU.

I’m thrilled to be offering a new course at College for Creative Studies next fall (in addition to my WSU classes). I haven’t had the opportunity to teach a performance course in an art school since I was a DAAD Guest professor in experimental performance at Hoschule für Kunst in Bremen ten years ago! It will be charged and I can’t wait to see what happens. Thank you @scott_northrup for the invitation. Tell your CCS friends! Open to all undergraduate students.

PERFORMANCE: HOME/HOUSE/CITY is a studio-based investigation of performance, broadly considered alongside contemporary practices in performance art, time-based art, and performing arts. Theoretically grounded in performance studies, including theories of performativity and performance of everyday life, students will research and create performance - solo, collaborative, and ensemble work-that culminates in a public-facing event at the Jam Handy in Detroit. The course follows a critical framework for performance-as-research led by a progression based on context: the home (personal, private, phantasmagoric, domestic) to
“house” (denoting disciplinary specificity of the black box/white cube and its trappings), to the city (public, site-specific, participatory, social). Part physical practice, part personal research, part choreographic experimentation, part collective experience, the rhythms, archetypes, worldings, and non-sequiturs of everyday life will provide the fodder for this performance studio.
