“…and as the evening light in the direction of the Giant’s Hill by Abbot’s-Cernel dissolved away, the white-faced moon of the season arose from the horizon that lay towards Middleton Abbey…”
The Cerne Abbas Giant is a brooding presence in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Standing proud, etched into the steep chalk hill above Max Gate, the author's home which he designed himself in 1885, the 'rude man' is cared for by National Trust staff and volunteers who labour to keep the figure in tip-top condition.
The hidden treasures around the houses of Thomas Hardy and Agatha Christie reveal the stories of two of Britain’s most celebrated authors - and the expert teams racing to preserve them.

Last year, Elif Shafak told us about her 💙 lapis lazuli 💙 obsession while writing There Are Rivers in the Sky - her sweeping novel set between the 19th century and modern times - and the colour's association with Nisaba, a goddess of literature, literacy and libraries who was gradually erased from history - "We need to remember her."
