I’d say the lydian mode is my favorite for a lot of things because it feels so universal in terms of its application.

It’s more than just a mode scale. When you break it up with different permutations, you create so many possibilities to where you surprise yourself with the amount of music you can come up with just using this sound!!

Throwback to one of my more popular reels I put out around a year ago!!

This was fun exploring how “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough” by MJ would sound if Marcus Miller, Rocco Prestia, Jaco Pastorius and Anthony Jackson played on it 🤣

Obviously the great Louis Johnson recorded the original bass part which is a masterpiece! But it is nice to often wonder how a tune might sound with somebody else’s essence 🤔

I’m also excited to be the MD on a show performing all MJ music!!

Improvising over chord changes doesn’t have to be a complicated thing or intimidating. Having a grounding in the basic theoretical elements like harmony, rhythm, melody etc. is essential but also allowing yourself to be free and expressive is what will put you on the right path to being a great improviser.
