Basil’s Garage
Custom-built vehicles for off-road travel and surf exploration.
Dealers for: Four Wheel Campers, ARB, Go Fast Campers, REDARC, Carli, and more!
Basil here, checking in from Baja.
I’ve always said having a 4WD vehicle isn’t necessary — you can get to some absolutely stunning places in the most basic of vehicles. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in what seemed like an insanely remote section of Baja, only to have a 2WD Corolla roll up and wave as they go past.
4WD really comes into play for the last 10%. That last little bit of dirt road that turns to mud, soft sand, a rocky climb, or whatever else may be preventing 2WD vehicles and vans from getting to the perfect campsite. You can flip it into 4x4 and continue on for just that little bit longer and get a secluded beach campsite all to yourself.
A prime example was yesterday. We were cruising down the coast of the Sea of Cortez looking for a place to call home for the night. We checked a very popular spot, but it was jam-packed with no privacy. With a little scouting via satellite view, I found this spot — literally less than a half mile away from the busy one, and just as good, if not better.
The only thing preventing everyone else from getting in here was a 200’ long section of large rocks. But with a bit of careful driving and some good ground clearance, we scored a private site all to ourselves.
Having 4WD, a lift, big tires, bumpers, lockers, etc., might not be at the top of everyone’s list. I’d rather keep it that way so spots like this, that aren’t as easy to access, stay empty — and those of us who decide to build our trucks to be capable get to experience these little slivers of harder-to-access paradise.
If you’re interested in traveling with a family, especially long-term travel, the Four Wheel Campers Flatbed model campers are perfect.
Here’s a walkthrough video of how Basil and his family camp/travel in their FWC Flatbed Hawk camper, and the little touches they added to make it fit their travel style!
Here at Basil’s Garage, all of the recommendations we make for parts on your build come from us actually using them and having first-hand experience doing “research.” Traveling to test campers at remote point breaks, pushing suspension systems to their limits, draining and charging power systems, cooking and living out of campers for months, and using nearly every single piece of gear we recommend to our customers.
We’ve traveled in vehicles large and small and have the experience behind the wheel, on the tools, and at campsites to understand how a vehicle should be set up for remote travel.
As a result, we build practical, simple, and capable off-road vehicles. Vehicles that are made to actually be used and not just look good parked around town.Vehicles that have scratches, stains in the camper, dust and dirt in every nook and cranny, and an endless amount of sand stuck in the carpet.
Let’s build your dream rig 🤘🏼

We’re giving away a truck.
No, this isn’t clickbait.
Over the years on Instagram, we’ve given away a lot of things — from a year’s supply of pancakes to truckloads of camping gear. But this time, we’re turning it up a notch. We’re giving away an actual truck fully built for adventure — the kind of rig I’d genuinely trade my own truck for.
Our company, @howlcampfires, is teaming up with @basilsgarage to build the ultimate surf adventure rig around an immaculate, classic 2001 Dodge 2500.

Most people think you need a $200,000 rig to adventure in Baja comfortably.
We don’t.
So we’re proving it.
Over the next few weeks, Basil’s Garage and HOWL Campfires are building the Ultimate Baja Surf Rig from a slept-on legend:
A 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 24-valve Cummins.
Solid axles.
Simple.
Reliable.
Cheap enough that you can actually use the thing without having a panic attack every time the trail throws a curveball.
And when we’re done?
We’re taking it to Baja and putting it head-to-head against Basil’s $200K rig so you can see the real differences.
Then we’re handing someone the keys. Maybe you.
The parts list is ridiculous:
• Carli Suspension from CJC
• Toyo Tires
• Nomad Wheels
• RiG’d UltraSwing
• Baja Designs
• REDARC
• Go Fast Campers
• Decked
• HEST
• ICECO
…and a pile more.
Here’s the deal:
• Email signup = 1 entry
• T-shirt + sticker bundle = 100 entries
• Every dollar spent at HOWL = more entries
This is Episode 1.
Episode 2 drops soon, and we’re breaking down the full build sheet and why this truck might actually be smarter than most modern overland rigs.
Tag the friend who’d drive this thing to Baja, and maybe never come back.

When @basillynch isn’t in the shop or chasing swell in Baja, he lets his team drive his chopped 80 in Flagstaff.

😅 You have to make a big decision: @basilsgarage chopped 80, or a 1st gen 4runner build?
Is there a right answer?

The shop and showroom will be closed May 9th - 16th while @basillynch and the whole Basil’s Garage team take some time to travel through Arizona on the way to Overland Expo Flagstaff!
We’re stoked to get the team out to use the rigs we spend so much time building. We’ll have to do a little post on everyone’s setups because there’s some seriously cool rigs headed on the trip!
If you need anything during this time, please submit a work request via our website, or shoot us an email!
If you’re headed to Flagstaff for Overland Expo, come say hey! We’re going to be in booth P2 all weekend with our favorite rigs.

2000 Ford F-250 w/ Custom Camper ( @basillynch ):: Feature Vehicle - by Chris Cordes ( @4x4_touring )
Basil’s love of surfing and his passion for the remote regions of the world meant that it also needed to be capable, reliable, and able to serve as an off-pavement bungalow for extended periods. It would need to run on less-than-perfect fuel, not cost a fortune, and support the weight of his living quarters on the back. His answer was a 2000 Ford F-250 with a homemade camper on the back. The truck was stock, with a short bed access cab, four-wheel drive, and a 7.3L turbo-diesel motor. When paired with the camper, it was the perfect combination from which to build. He purchased the truck and before long took to calling it Bruce. “It just reminded me of the great white shark in Finding Nemo, big and aggressive on the outside, but kind of nice on the inside.”
Over the next year and a half, Basil poured his heart and soul into modifying this truck. Whether it was in a friend’s driveway, beach-side parking lot, or distant campsite, you could find him wrenching on the Ford while performing maintenance or installing accessories. I suspect few vehicles have been assembled in a greater variety of places than Bruce, which seems fitting for a camper destined for a life on the road.

I suspect few vehicles have been assembled in a greater variety of places than Bruce, which seems fitting for a camper destined for a life on the road.

2000 Ford F-250 w/ Custom Camper ( @basillynch ):: Feature Vehicle - by Chris Cordes ( @4x4_touring )

How many times can we say Flatbed in one reel? A lot…
@summitexpeditiontrucks and @fourwheelcampers are a match made in heaven.

Another Ford Super Duty just rolled out of the shop!
This customer came to us to transfer their Four Wheel Camper Granby from an older Ford to this newer one. They had us build the truck to carry the Camper's weight and make it perform better on and off-road. We also installed a new Summit expedition truck's flatbed to be able to accommodate that camper on the back.
- Ford F350 4-door long bed
- Carli Pintop suspension
- Carli torsion front sway bar
- Carli XXHD rear leaf springs
- Hellwig rear sway bar
- Ford factory Warn winch installed by us
- Baja Designs fog pocket kit
- Camper charge side upgrade
- Summit Expedition Trucks Tray
- SET front garage
- SET under tray drawer
- SET under-tray water tank
- 38x11.5r17 Toyo Tires off Basil’s Ford for photos
Let us know if you’re looking to get some work done on your truck. We can help prep the whole thing for an existing four wheel camper, or get you a whole package with a brand new camper. We’re here to help!
