Onyeka Igwe (@memoriesofabiglife) presents a live iteration of No archive can restore this chorus of (diasporic) shame.

So thrilled to be working with Onyeka and the Chorus as part of this, reimagining songs from the Egba Market Women’s Revolt - a seminal anti-colonial protest - drawn from the archive of Funmilayo Ransome Kuti.

Triptych came out of @jessica_a_ashman ‘s research in the botanical archives at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. It is an alternative universe in which three imagined characters (Afiba, Datura and Juba) are portals for how Indigenous and African-Jamaicans used plants to resist their enslavement: from food sovereignty to spiritual connection and rebellion.

Embedded within the soundscape is a song cycle dedicated to some of the plants that would have been central to their lives, offering an imagining otherwise to the trauma and violence of the botanical colonialism within the archives.

APEFTL is a live collaboration between Jess, Rich and I, expanding on the soundscape made for Jess’ exhibition ‘Those that do not smile will kill me’, the result of her research within the botany collections at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.

Beyond excited to be part of a live iteration of Onyeka’s brilliant film installation, No archive can restore this chorus of (diasporic) shame.

As part of it Onyeka asked me to reimagine songs from the Egba Market Women’s Revolt against colonial oppression in the 1940s, with lyrics from the archive of educator and activist Funmilayo Ransome Kuti.

It’s an honour to reactivate these words and a real joy the song cycle will be sung by this ridic group!

Today Triptych is released into the world! Brought to you by All Power Emanates From The Land aka me and @auclairmusic’s magic from my @bristolmuseums exhibition ‘Those that do not smile will kill me’ earlier this year 🌺

Triptych is a record that explores the lives and medicinal/spiritual properties of the plants researched for the project - from 1700’s Jamaica to present day species on the island - channelled through three characters: Afiba, Datura and Juba. It is an alternative universe of how Indigenous and enslaved African Jamaicans engaged with the plants to resist Babylon.

I’m so thankful to @auclairmusic and @kyle.acab for this dreamlike collaboration of ours and I feel so proud of what we’ve made 🥹 🌱

It’s a good feeling to get all of these multilayered narratives out of the gallery and into your ears at home!
And this Sunday 30th we’ll be playing (most) of the record live accompanied with the wonderous @richardjphoenix 🙏🏽 at @cafeotodalston - tickets are still available!
