Dear Friends,
The Sun… Is my religion - opens this Sunday at 3pm at the @hahndorfacademy.
This one sits close.
It’s a meditation on light, history, and the weight of land. Silver gelatin prints, sewn, torn, mended - trying to make sense of what we hold and what we inherit.
The show’s up now at Hahndorf Academy. Would love to see you there.
It runs until 30 November if you’re around later.
I drove to my brother’s @luke_milgate place in @orangecitycouncil on my way to Wellington from Melbourne. They’ve not long moved there from Wellington. We used to get up before sunrise and get a quick 9 holes in before I had to go play cricket. This day we went for a bush walk on Mt Canobolas/Gaanha Bula
We watched my nephew @james_milgate hit a balls before I made my way home to Wellington.
I love getting back to Wello. It reminds me of what I know and what I thought I knew. It’s been hard to get back over the last few year and now that I am much closer it’s magnetism is greater.
I’ve been blessed to be able to create work that directly affects people. Work that has been welcomed and cherished - and work that keeps on giving.
I owe so much to this place, the land and people.
The lifelong friendships, the perspectives and lives lived. Together. Side by side.
There is something very special that only someone from Wellington can understand. We travel far and wide. And we bump into each other. Often people die in threes. We see it all and cop the brunt from our neighbours.
Positive or negative it affects us. But the defiant nature of our people, turning their backs to face our supporters sitting on the hill.
Before I knew anything. It’s this place, you see here just outside of the township is where I grew.

Thank you to @dubboregionalcouncil @jeff_amatto, @walker.bec.23 More Cultural Rehabs Less Jails Aboriginal Corporation, the leaders andthe young people involved in the programs.
I’ve had the privilege of walking beside parts of Jeff’s journey, gathering fragments of it through film and photography. Listening carefully.
Because that is what storytelling is to me.
Becoming a vessel. A conduit. Living in trust and holding enough space for people to reveal something of themselves that already exists beneath the surface.
This work grew through the commissioned SCOREBOARD and time spent with the young people involved in More Cultural Rehabs Less Jails @mcrlj_ac . Together we explored light, perception and portraiture. We slowed down long enough to notice how light moves across a face, how presence changes when someone feels seen, and how a portrait can hold dignity, strength and vulnerability all at once.
The eyes became important to me.
Eyes carry experience. The resilience, humour, protection, hope. No matter how fragmented the work became through tearing, sewing and reconstruction, the eyes remained steady. Looking back at us. Asking us to stop long enough to truly see.
This work is.. @wpccdubbo
It is about visibility.
About presence.
About belonging.
About what becomes possible when people walk beside each other with trust, patience and care.
I hope this work honours the young people involved, honours Wellington and honours the quiet but powerful work being done within this community every day.
